HP EliteBook 1040 G9 review – great build quality and a lot of features

Design and construction

The EliteBook 1040 G9 is not diverging from the typical EliteBook design. It has a matte silver finish on its all-aluminum chassis, which
is pretty resistant to flex – both the lid and the base.

In terms of dimensions, the device has a profile of 19.3mm, which is not too thin. However, it weighs only 1.16 kg. Thanks to that, and the curved edges on both surfaces, the EliteBook 1040 G9 is extremely comfortable to carry around.

Unfortunately, the lid can’t be opened with one hand. However, the bezels around its matte display are really thin. But this is not even the best thing about it. The fun starts above the display, where you will see a 5MP Web camera, paired with a privacy shutter, and an IR face recognition scanner. In addition, there are two optional sensors – ambient light, and ambient color.

Next comes the base. It houses a backlit, spill-resistant keyboard. Its key travel is long, while the feedback is clicky. At the end of the day, it is one of the best solutions we’ve seen, even battling Lenovo’s ThinkPads in this aspect.

Similarly impressive is the glass-shod touchpad. This gives it a very smooth gliding experience, while the tracking and responsiveness are on point. You can even find a fingerprint reader to its right.

And if you turn the laptop upside down, you will see the speaker cutouts, as well as the ventilation grill. In this case, the hot air gets exhausted through a vent in between the base and the lid.

Ports

On the left side, you get an HDMI 2.0 connector, followed by a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, and a Smart Card reader. Switch sides, and you’ll see an Audio jack, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, a Security lock slot, and a Nano SIM card tray. Depending on the WWAN card, the machine is limited to either LTE (Intel XMM 7560 R+ LTE-Advanced Pro) or 5G (Intel 5000 5G Solution) connectivity.
