Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5i (14, Gen 8) review – its cooling and display are very good

Design and construction

The laptop is made of aluminum, it has a clean design with minimal branding, and it has a noticeable protrusion on the lid for easier opening. The anodized finish doesn’t attract a lot of smudges, and the Arctic grey color contributes to a stealthier appearance. This little fella weighs just 1.46 kg and has a profile of just 15.99 mm. The portability is definitely good.

The lid can be opened with a single hand. The unit bends in the middle if you press it on purpose and it’s averagely flexible in an opened position. The rigidness isn’t the best one out there. The whole zone below the keyboard is bendable and the keyboard deck flexes a bit during typing.

The bezels around the display are thin, especially the side ones.

The “hump” houses a 1080p IR Web camera with a privacy shutter.

The device can lay almost fully flat on your desk.

Expectedly, the keyboard lacks a NumPad section but it has a backlight and its intensity can be controlled via the Lenovo Vantage software. The keycaps are big and they have decent travel and clicky feedback.

The touchpad size is okay for this kind of form factor – 75 x 120 mm. The pad is smooth, its accuracy isn’t the best, and the clicks are a bit louder than usual which can be annoying for some of you.

On the bottom plate, you can spot three rubber feet and a large ventilation grill. The hot air is guided through a vent on the back that aims towards the lower bezel of the display. So, a decent amount of heat is reaching the panel under heavy CPU or GPU loads.

Ports

On the left side, there is an HDMI 2.1 connector (that can handle 4K 60Hz external displays), a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, and a Thunderbolt 4 connector. The two Type-Cs support Power Delivery 3.0 and DisplayPort 1.4a. On the right, you’ll see two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports (the former supports Always On functionality), an SD card reader, and an Audio combo jack.
