Display Profiles for ASUS VZ24EHE – Professional Accuracy with a Budget Monitor?

What we have here is perhaps the lightest and thinnest monitor we’ve seen. Just looking at the ASUS VZ24EHE from the side and it’s seriously impressive. As for the specs of the monitor, it’s a rather simple piece of machinery. It’s got a Full HD resolution IPS panel that spans across a 23.8-inch diagonal. With a 75Hz refresh rate, scrolling and moving around the screen is a bit smoother than your standard 60Hz panel, albeit not by much.

While a rather budget offering, all it has to do to get our recommendation is offer decent color coverage and good enough accuracy, and you’ll have a really good screen for enjoying movies, and shows, as well as creating content of your own. With our Display Profiles, we’re certain we can make a Creator underdog monitor for those who are just starting their design journey and don’t need to break the bank for a decent screen. The DeltaE goes below 2.0, so it’s perfect for your first professional monitor if you’re starting to learn design or image editing.

What’s in the box? Assembly

Inside you get pretty much everything you need to set up the monitor, while the assembly happens very quickly, with no screwdrivers needed.

Drivers and software

The drivers for the monitor can be found on ASUS’s website. You can also install the ASUS DisplayWidget for more features and customization of the settings.

Design and connectivity

The monitor has a simple design with a circular stand that is hollow. The base is just a ring that connects to the bottom of the monitor. The connection houses the tilting mechanism, with which you can achieve a better viewing angle. In terms of the design, we’ve got some of the thinnest bezels available, as even the chin is super thin, just enough to bear the ASUS logo, some buttons on the bottom, and nothing more. In terms of ports, there’s just an HDMI port, a VGA port, and an audio jack.

What’s really surprising about the ASUS VZ24EHE is that it comes with FreeSync support, which will help you when gaming on it, and you can game on it, despite this not being a gaming monitor. If your games’ fps hovers around the 60-70 fps mark, you’ll have no problem with screen tearing, and the experience will feel smooth.

Color coverage

Here’s an illustration (Fig. 1). The whole “sail-shaped” map below consists of all the colors we can see, while the black crooked line shows all the colors from real-world scenes and nature around us.

Then, we’ve drawn some of the most important and interesting color spaces, compared to the colors the panel of ASUS VZ24EHE can show:

Standard/For Web: sRGB – widely used color space for most consumer devices, ideal for Web design and development
For Print: AdobeRGB – used in professional graphic design, and print
For Photographers/Video Editors: DCI-P3 – used in high-end film production, and digital cinema, and photo editing
Premium HDR: Rec.2020 – the widest consumer ITU color standard, covering a massive 75.8% of the visible spectrum, a benchmark for premium HDR content

ASUS VZ24EHE: the yellow dashed triangle (– – – – – –) represents the range of colors this monitor can display. In our tests, we calculated the total color coverage of the monitor at 94% of the sRGB gamut.

(Fig.1) ASUS VZ24EHE covers 94% of the Web colors (sRGB)

This means that if the ASUS VZ24EHE tries to show any color outside of its triangle, it will show the closest color to it that’s inside the triangle.

Color accuracy

Now let’s see how big is the difference between the real colors and the one you’ll see on the ASUS VZ24EHE. We measure that distance in DeltaE – the bigger the number, the more different they look.

For the next illustration, we’ve chosen 24 common colors like dark and light skin, blue sky, green grass, etc.

Values below 2.0 are considered suitable for color-sensitive work. Before our calibration of ASUS VZ24EHE, the Average color accuracy was 3.1 dE (Fig. 2), and with our Web Design and Office Work profile, it lowers to 1.9 dE (Fig. 3), which is a 1.7x increase in accuracy. With a 1.9 dE and wide color coverage, you can use the monitor for professional color-work, photo editing and other similar tasks.

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom-tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate (they may seem strange at first but after a few minutes our brain will start recognizing them as accurate ones – that’s how Health-Guard differs from alternatives like f.lux).

Pro Tip: As the Health-Guard profile simulates paper and has as accurate as possible colors, it could be a great tool for prepress designers!

Gaming and Movies

We also have a third Gaming and Movies profile, which regulates the black colors, making dark areas in games and movies appear more visible, thus giving you a better viewing experience. Shooting at your opponent first can be a make-or-break moment, so make sure you’re best prepared with our profile.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

Verdict

The ASUS VZ24EHE on paper looks like your standard budget monitor, however, with the help of our Display Profiles, it becomes a creator monitor, as the wide 93% sRGB coverage perfectly fits the 1.9 dE value. With the addition of FreeSync support, as well as the abnormally high refresh rate (at least for budget monitor standards) of 75Hz, you can play games knowing that the image is crisp, smooth, and tear-free.

The design of the monitor is also interesting, as we believe ASUS might have been trying to make the lightest and most minimalist monitor they could. It’s super thin, when looked from the side, while also having thin bezels. However, the port selection is slim too, coming without even a DisplayPort.
