AMD Ryzen 3 4300U vs Ryzen 7 3700U – last year’s champ is today’s “nothing special”

Today we are putting the AMD Ryzen 3 4300U up against the Ryzen 7 3700U, and while the former came out in March of this year, the latter was introduced all the way back in January of last year. Both are from the Zen microarchitecture, with the Ryzen 3 4300U being in the new Zen 2 architecture, while the Ryzen 7 3700U is in the Zen+. Another difference that comes from the architecture of the processors is that the Zen 2 has a 7nm fabrication while the Zen+ has a 12nm version. It may not seem like much, but that difference allows the Zen 2 to rise in temperature slower, making it take more to overheat.

Quick specs

Once more, we will be explaining what the Ryzen 3 4300U has to offer, which is a decent 2.70 GHz base frequency, and when pushed, it can get up to 3.70 GHz. This processor has 4 cores and 4 threads, so there won’t be any multithreading going on. We can see the 7nm coming in use not only with heat dispersion but also with lowering the stress on your power supply by only going up to 25W when pushed.

Let us take a look at the Ryzen 7 3700U, it has 4 cores and 8 threads. This processor has a base frequency of 2.30 GHz, but when pushed can go up to 4.0 GHz, which is slightly higher than what its newer counterpart can do. This comes at a cost, however, the energy consumed this time can get up to 35W, which can make it reach temperatures hotter than its competitor.

CPU Benchmarks

Here we can see a close comparison with the 3D Rendering test, with the Ryzen 7 3700U being victorious. But when it comes to the Photoshop test we can witness that the Ryzen 3 4300U stomping on its competitor with an advantage of 46.1% or 4.23 seconds.

Results are from the Cinebench 20 CPU test (the higher the score, the better)

Results are from our Photoshop benchmark test (the lower the score, the better)

GPU Benchmarks

Unsurprisingly, the RX Vega 10 is the one that crushes on the tests with it being the stronger integrated graphics. The RX Vega 5 is, still, a decent Integrated GPU it even won in the Heaven 4.0 test.

Results are from the 3DMark: Time Spy (Graphics) benchmark (higher the score, the better)

Results are from the 3DMark: Fire Strike (Graphics) benchmark (higher the score, the better)

Results are from the Unigine Superposition benchmark (higher the score, the better)

Performance summary (gaming tests)

As always AMD strives to outdo themselves. We can see the Ryzen 7 3700U, which was their CPU for gaming from last year being outdone by their Ryzen 3 4300U, which is their cheap consumer standard this year.

Verdict

Here we can see an interesting comparison, with a better performance from the Ryzen 7 3700U at the GPU Benchmarks but loosing in Haven 4.0. The Ryzen 3 4300U outperforming the Ryzen 7 3700U in the gaming test, with it having an advantage of 79%. We also have the Ryzen 3 4300U completing the photoshop test 4.23 seconds faster than its competitor. With results like these, the only thing left to decide the victor is pricing.
