MSI’s most recent offering, the Summit E13 Flip Evo combines an eye-catching design with snappy Evo-certified processors and a bunch of other goodies, which we will talk about below. The laptop faces tough competition, however, mainly from the Dell XPS 13 9310 (2-in-1).

Today we present you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the MSI Summit E13 Flip Evo.

MSI Summit E13 Flip Evo: Full Specs / In-depth Review

3 reasons to BUY the MSI Summit E13 Flip Evo

1. Design and build quality

Being a premium 13-inch convertible, the Summit E13 Flip employs premium materials for its entire body, with aluminum surrounding every inch of this device. The laptop has pointy corners and chrome sides, which on the black model are colored in copper, which contrasts nicely. The rigidity is great, with the device resisting our attempts when we tried to flex it. In terms of dimensions, the machine weighs only 1.35 kg and has a profile of 14.9 mm, making it a very compact offering.

Its lid opens with one hand, with the hinges acting as a level, lifting up the backside of the base so that the cooling has more airflow. Opening the lid reveals a glass display cover with thin bezels, except for the bottom one, a decent keyboard unit with somewhat clicky feedback and relatively long key travel, along with a glass protected touchpad which makes the gliding really smooth, while the accuracy of the pad itself is also very good.

2. Display quality

The laptop offers a single IPS display option with a 13.4-inch diagonal, Full HD+ resolution, and a 16:10 aspect ratio. The panel has comfortable viewing angles, a max brightness of 516 nits in the middle of the screen, 497 nits as an average for the entire display area, and a maximum deviation of 9%, making it so far great for professional work. The display also has a high contrast ratio of 1470:1, along with 99% sRGB coverage.

In terms of color accuracy, the panel performed really well, especially when we applied our Design and Gaming profile. Below you can check the results of our color accuracy test with the factory settings (left) and with our profile applied (right).

Buy our profiles

Since our profiles are tailored for each individual display model, this article and its respective profile package are meant for MSI Summit E13 Flip Evo configurations with 13.4″ Sharp LQ134N1JW53 (SHP1512) (FHD+, 1920 × 1200) IPS panel.

In addition to receiving efficient and health-friendly profiles, by buying LaptopMedia's products you also support the development of our labs, where we test devices in order to produce the most objective reviews possible.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

3. Battery life

With a large battery size of 70Wh, we expect pretty good results and we got them. The battery lasted for  13 hours and 3 minutes of Web browsing, and 11 hours and 32 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

2 reasons NOT to buy the MSI Summit E13 Flip Evo

1. Upgradeability

With devices this compact, upgradeability is often the first thing to be sacrificed. All of the RAM is soldered onto the motherboard. The storage is upgradeable through a single M.2 PCIe x4 drive.

Here is our detailed teardown video, which shows how to access the SSD slot.

2. Cooling

The cooling setup here consists of two thick heat pipes connected to two fans and heat spreaders.

Max CPU load

The Core i5-1135G7 maintained a temperature of 96°C while keeping a clock speed of above 3.00GHz even after 15 minutes of testing.

Comfort during full load

The bottom panel and the area above the keyboard get really hot, with a temperature of above 50°C. The keyboard also got pretty hot, with its hottest spot reaching 46.7°C. In terms of noise, the unit can definitely be heard even without the Cooler Boost setting, but at least the cooling does its job and doesn’t allow the CPU to throttle.
