Dynabook Portege X30L-K review – this is an exquisite business notebook

Design and construction

Can you guess the reason that we think Alder Lake P-series was a mistake? If you are thinking about the laptop’s dimensions, we can tell you that you’re on the right track. The Portege X30L-K has a profile of 17.9mm and weighs only 904 grams.

This is possible thanks to the Magnesium Alloy chassis. According to Dynabook, it is designed to pass the MIL-STD-810H durability tests. Despite that, the lid is super flexy – we are talking processed cheese level of flex. Perhaps, that’s because of the plastic material there. Expectedly, the base is significantly stronger.

Due to the low overall weight, the lid cannot be opened with a single hand. It has a rather traditional lowkey design, which features thin side bezels a large bottom one, and an average top border. The latter is where you will find the HD camera with its privacy shutter. An IR face recognition scanner is also located next to the camera.

On the base, we see another interesting lineup. On the northmost side, you will see the power button. Despite its shape, it doesn’t have an embedded fingerprint reader. Below it, there is the keyboard, which has a backlight and is spill resistant. Some of the keycaps are a bit small, but the key travel is surprisingly long.

Moreover, the feedback is clicky. All of this results in a fantastic typing experience. In the middle of the board, there is the so-called Accupoint. It works with a couple of buttons, placed right above the touchpad.

As the tradition commands, these buttons are not very tactile. On the bright side, the touchpad is super smooth and really responsive. However, its size is a bit small, and the embedded fingerprint reader takes up even more of the already lacking space inside. Unfortunately, the area above it and to its left is unusable.

Now, if we turn the laptop upside down, we are going to see the speaker cutouts. In addition, there is the ventilation grill, where the hot air is exhausted through a vent on the back of the device.

Ports

On the left side, there are two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI 2.0 connector, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, and an Audio jack. Then, on the right, you get a security lock slot, a LAN port, another USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, a MicroSD card slot, a SIM card tray, and a Smart Card reader.
