HP ProBook 440 G10 review – snappy office device that needs a revamped cooling system

Design and construction

As we said, the design is almost identical to the ProBook 440 G9 and the same applies to the dimensions. So, we got a 19.9 mm profile and a weight of 1.38 kg for the configurations with the 42.75Wh battery and 1.42 kg for the notebooks with the bigger 51.3Wh capacity.

You can open the lid with one hand and probably you’ll notice that the hinge mechanism is very smooth. The bezels around the panel are narrow and the top one houses the 720p Web camera with privacy shutter and with Temporal Noise Reduction. There is an optional 5MP IR Camera with Temporal Noise Reduction as well. In addition, the lid is spongy even when it’s closed and when it’s opened it’s kind of flexible but not too much.

On the base, we can see a big speaker grille above the keyboard. The latter has an optional backlight, it’s spill resistant (which is very important for an office device), and it has a long key travel and clicky feedback. This makes it comfortable for long typing sessions. The optional fingerprint reader is situated under the right arrow key.

The lid can be also opened to an almost fully flat position. The base is stable for the most part and there are some weak spots. The first one is the center of the speaker grille and we saw a bit of flex on the upper parts of the two palm rest areas (the zones that are close to the touchpad).

The pad is medium-sized and its smooth surface is allowing good accuracy and trouble-free gliding.

On the bottom panel, we can spot two big rubber feet and a ventilation grill which is the source of fresh air for the cooling fan. The heat is pushed through a vent in between the base and the lid and this results in a slightly warmer lower section of the display (when the CPU is under heavy stress).

Ports

On the left, you can spot a security lock slot, a LAN port, and a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port. On the other side, there is a power plug, two USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) ports with Power Delivery and DisplayPort 1.4 function, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, an HDMI 2.1 connector (that supports up to 4K 60Hz external displays), an Audio jack, and an optional Nano SIM card slot for WWAN.
