Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 1 (AMD) review – snappy business device with long battery life

Verdict

The Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 1 (AMD) is an unpretentious business device that doesn’t feature jaw-dropping specs but it has enough power for usual daily tasks or normal office work. Our device has an AMD Ryzen 7 7730U and we didn’t experience any slowdowns or system hangs during testing. The laptop definitely feels snappy but keep in mind that the default 4-core CPU variant (which is the Ryzen 3 7330U) isn’t a multitasking beast.

The cooling solution is adequate. Thanks to it, the 8-core Ryzen 7 7730U (which is the top processor variant for the series) can maintain a stable ~2.70 GHz clock no matter the load alongside good temperatures. The noise under load is kept as low as possible without sacrificing the performance – the single fan is almost quiet when the CPU is stressed at max. On the outside, the keyboard doesn’t feel hot so you can use the laptop even when the processor is under heavy load.

The input devices are a pleasant surprise. The keyboard is cozy for long typing sessions and the touchpad is smooth. The I/O also looks good with its two Type-C and two Type-A connectors. The 1200p IPS display (CSOT MNG007QS1-3 (LEN41B5)) is all you need for normal work. It has wide viewing angles and a good contrast ratio. The absence of PWM usage is mandatory for such a notebook that is going to be used for long hours. Well, the sRGB coverage is narrow, but we can accept that since we aren’t talking about an expensive workstation for content creation.

The rigidity of the chassis could be better. It’s not bad, but the lid and the base aren’t among the most stable ones that we’ve seen. The upgradability options are fine for the price tag. Sure, part of the memory is soldered, but there is a SODIMM slot so you can expand the RAM up to 40GB of DDR4-3200 MHz. Not bad. You get two M.2 slots for storage but they are limited to Gen 3 speeds. Some of the important goodies are optional like the keyboard backlight, the fingerprint reader, and the IR camera.

The cherry on the top here is the battery life. The optional 57Wh capacity is enough for 14 hours and 17 minutes of Web browsing, or 10 hours of video playback. Great! The Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 1 (AMD) is a portable business laptop that can offer good comfort under load, snappy performance, a PWM-free display, comfortable input devices, and good I/O.
