NVIDIA GeForce MX130 vs AMD Radeon RX Vega 10

Last time we took a look at two dedicated graphics chips – one being part of the NVIDIA’s entry-level GPUs – the GeForce MX130, and the other one being manufactured by AMD – the Radeon RX 540. Today, we shall put side by side NVIDIA’s dedicated solution and AMD’s integrated Radeon RX Vega 10 found on the Ryzen 7 2700u APU.

Specs overview

Taking a look at the specs sheet of the NVIDIA GeForce MX130 unveils 384 shader cores, 24 TMUs, and 8 ROPs. Built upon a 28 nm manufacturing process, the graphics card is based on the Maxwell architecture and supports DirectX 12.0. What’s more, it is equipped with 2,048 GB GDDR5 memory connected via a 64-bit memory bus. NVIDIA GeForce MX130 is operating at a base frequency of 1122 MHz, which can go up to 1242 MHz. Also, the TDP is rated at 30W.

Moving on, as we already mentioned, AMD Radeon RX Vega 10 is an integrated graphics chip found on the Ryzen 7 2700u APU and has 10 computing units, which translates into 640 shaders in total. Based on a 14 nm manufacturing process, it is part of the AMD’s Vega family GPUs with support for 12_1 feature level of DirectX 12 resulting in better efficiency. We should also mention the Tiled Rasterization support. The specs also include a maximum frequency of 1300 MHz, as well as exceptional computing performance from both CPU and GPU with a total of 15 W TDP. The GPU also shares the DDR4 modules with the CPU, which means that a faster RAM frequency leads to faster GPU performance.

Benchmarks

In the graph above you can see an approximate comparison between the two GPUs that can be found in Acer Aspire 5 and Acer Swift 3 (SF315-41) respectively. The race in the Fire Strike (Graphics) benchmark is pretty tight – NVIDIA GeForce MX130 shows just 2% better results. However, the results from our Unigine Heaven 3.0 and 4.0 tests are more eloquent – NVIDIA’s GPU outperforms its rival with 69% and 23% respectively. On the other hand, AMD Radeon RX Vega 10 manages to surpass the GeForce MX130 with 23% as far as the Unigine Superposition benchmark is concerned.

Conclusion

In our opinion, judging by the performance of both chips in our benchmarks, the winner of today’s comparison should be the dedicated NVIDIA GeForce MX130 as it beats its integrated opponent in 3/4 tests.
