Design and construction

Even though both laptops provide productivity which is high enough (and makes them part of the big virtual family), Lenovo makes a difference by emphasizing on the appearance, which with gaming machines is usually characterized by aggressiveness alone. Dell, on the other hand, offers mostly budget and business series, so when this model came out, we were very happy that customers will have more gaming options to choose from.

At first sight, the Inspiron 7559 does not suggest that it is anything more than a mid-range solution for business tasks. This is due to the exquisite and simplistic design dominated by black and elegant and stylish bordeaux red here and there. The difference in build quality between the 7559 and Y700 is clearly noticeable just by looking at the lid. Matte rubber is used for the lid and interior of the Inspiron 7559. In this way the issues with fingerprints and smudges (inevitable unless you are wearing gloves while playing) are resolved. The keyboard of this device uses white backlighting which also contributes to the pleasant style. In the base part below the screen you can notice the highlighted bordeaux strip of the speakers covering almost the entire length of the device.

Those of you who are after high quality and durability will be happy to learn that the Lenovo Y700 has not changed much from its predecessor the Y50. The brushed aluminum finish of the lid provide rigidity in case of any accidental or unwanted pressure. In comparison to the Dell Inspiron 7559, the upper part and the interior are made of plastic and fingerprint magnets – perhaps you will bear that in mind, if you enjoy eating while in the world of virtual reality. Black is the dominant color and red is used for the speakers which are located in the upper part (just like the case of the Inspiron). The aggressive style is present again thanks to the sharp edges that shape the model,  and is further emphasized by the red backlighting.

With the exception of build quality, the size and weight of the two models are similar. It is up to your discretion to decide which one to choose, both have their advantages and disadvantages. Now we want to continue with another essential section of our review – the display.

Display Quality and PWM

Perhaps this is the most important feature to compare, as gamers spend countless hours in the virtual world, which affects their eyesight. We are glad to mention that both devices feature a 15.6″ IPS display, with a resolution of 1920 х 1080 (Full HD). Apart from this, both laptops have comfortable viewing angles, which is due to the IPS panel, of course. If you are a customer who uses the laptop not only for gaming, but also for photo or video editing, you will be disappointed by both devices, because they offer very poor coverage of the sRGB color gamut – and this is where the similarities end.

Despite the poor sRGB coverage, the screen of the Dell Inspiron 7559 has higher color accuracy, leading to better image quality. To our bitter disappointment, the display uses PWM, which is taken care of by our Profiles that can be purchased from here.

In the case of the Lenovo Y700, the sRGB coverage is really low – 51% vs 55% (Dell). Despite this fact, PWM is not observed if you use brightness levels above 59% – we do recommend that, because with lower brightness levels you get not only PWM, but also additional straining of your eyes which is due to the lower pulsation frequency.

Specs sheet comparison

The two models feature Intel’s latest generation of processors – Core i5-6300HQ and Core i7-6700HQ. Their power consumption is the same, and the Core i7-6700HQ supports the so-called Hyper-Threading technology that emulates one virtual core for each physical and thus establishing a total of 8 threads. Despite the same number of physical cores and power consumption, the operating frequencies are different. The chip of the Inspiron 7559 has a base frequency of 2.3GHz, which can be increased up to 3.2GHz, thanks to the Intel Turbo Boost technology. On the other hand, the Intel Core i7-6700HQ has a base frequency of 2.6GHz and similarly to the Core i5-6300HQ can go up to 3.5GHz.

If you are wondering which CPU is better for you, you can jump over to our comparison of the two chips.

More information about them and their position in our Top CPU Ranking you can find HERE.

The two laptops have the same GeForce GTX 960M GPU. We must say that it has several configurations – inside the Inspiron 7559 we find the 4 GB version, whereas in the Y700 there is only the 2GB GDDR5 own memory. The chip is the top representative of the Maxwell mid-range, and is capable of coping with all contemporary gaming titles, with settings ranging from Medium to High and Full HD resolution.

Battery Life

Yet another very important test in our comparison. Even though the two models have different CPUs, the power consumption is the same, which means that the required capacity for full functionality is almost the same for both devices.

We are more than happy with what we observed. The Lenovo Y700 is equipped with a more powerful 60Wh battery (in comparison to the 53 Wh of its predecessor the Y50), which will be pleasing to those of you who are Lenovo fans. With Dell’s model power consumption has been taken seriously and they have used a 4-cell 74Wh battery.

Before mentioning the results, we would like to say that we are more than happy with the two models as their performance was exceptional (with their hardware and IPS panel taken into account). We used the usual settings for our tests and registered a difference of one hour in the first test (Web browsing) and 30 minutes in the gaming test – in favor of Dell, as expected because of its bigger battery.

Gaming Performance

After sharing our comparison between the two CPUs in the two models, perhaps you already know the answer to this question. Well, the difference is minor, bearing in mind that both have the GeForce GTX 960M GPU and 8GB of RAM. In the games, where more CPU cores are needed (GTA V, for example) the difference becomes noticeable. On the other hand, with higher settings where a game needs more graphical memory, the 4GB version in the Inspiron are a plus. You can find the results below.

Temperatures

Our final comparison is on the topic of how the devices handle the heat coming from their chips. Fortunately, we are beginning to see more and more cooling vents being moved to the back of high-end laptops. The two subjects of our discussion have been designed in this way. What is more, the Inspiron 7559 also has a third vent on the left, just under the charging port.

When loaded to the max, both CPUs did great, keeping their maximum operating frequency of 3.1GHz for the Core i7-6700HQ and 2.8GHz for the Core i5-6300HQ. Their temperatures were reasonable enough for the use of their absolute capacity – 78 °C in the 6700HQ and 68 °C in Dell’s model. When the GPU load is started, the Inspiron takes the upper hand. The Y50 problems were noticeable here as well – temperature rise to the maximum 100 °C, leading to the lowering of the CPU frequency which reaches 800MHz. No problems occurred after one hour of maximum load with the Inspiron 7559, the CPU maintained its 2.8GHz frequency. Bear in mind that these test conditions are unattainable with the use of conventional software. In the pictures above you can see the surface temperature maps of these laptops.

Verdict

Lenovo have learned their lesson since the Y50 and the new mobile device is definitely worth it. The build quality is very high again, with the fingerprint issue being the only negative aspect here. We can also mention that the added M.2 slot is a great plus and a necessity in certain situations. Furthermore, the updated battery did more than well in our tests, and the lack of PWM is also a big advantage of this laptop.

On the other hand, Dell introduces its gaming model – and what a machine it is! The device did great in our temperature tests, owing to its well-built cooling system which allows for lower temperatures during longer gaming sessions. Its screen offers slightly better colors and the PWM is reduced by the increased frequency of 20.5kHz, but still it is there. The greater 74Wh capacity of the battery is the reason it surpassed the Lenovo’s battery (60Wh). This was yet another comparison by us, and we leave the decision-making to you – the maniacs.
