Intel announced its first 10-core i7 processor – Core i7-6950X

bdw-e-1-1Intel announced their new extreme processors with Broadwell-E architecture at their conference today. These are the first extreme chips manufactured through a 14nm technological process. Even though the American company already has 10-core processors, they belong to the Xeon lineup which is meant for servers and does not include an integrated GPU.

This is namely the reason why Intel announced their first 10-core CPU which is part of the top gaming class – Core i7. The chip is also known as Intel Core i7-6950X and can be yours for 1 723 USD. It has a base frequency of 3.0 GHz that can be increased up to 3.5 GHz. Of course, you have overclocking options. Among the technologies it supports is the new Turbo Boost 3.0 – it increases the chip frequency automatically even when most of the cores are engaged.

As far as power consumption goes, that of the chip is 140 Watts, and the cache is third-level and is “only” 25 MB. Core i7-6950X supports DDR4 RAM with a frequency of 2400 MHz. In comparison, contemporary CPUs support RAM chips with base frequency up to 2133 MHz.

Perhaps you may wonder why Core i7-6950X comes at such a high price. Apart from lacking any competition (we are uncertain whether AMD will present a pleasant suprise in the coming days), the new CPU is said to be much more better performer than other models currently available on the market (according to Intel at least). In comparison to the currently most used 6th generation Core i7 CPU – Core i7-6700K, the Core i7-6950X is two times better at 3D rendering and 65% faster at 4K video editing. And when we compare it to its predecessor, Core i7-5960X (8-core), the new Intel CPU is 35% more powerful at 3D rendering and 25% faster at 4K video editing.

As far as virtual reality goes, the new “beast” is 25% faster than Core i7-5960X at 4K video resolutions, and while streaming on Twitch on Full HD. This means not only much better performance, but also improved multitasking. Apart from this “10-headed beast”, Intel also presented the other part of Broadwell-E extreme chips. They are the following: on 8-core chip codenamed Core i7-6900K, and two 6-core processors – Core i7-6850K and i7-6800K. As you may notice, all models with microarchitecture come with an unlocked multiplier allowing you to enjoy overclocking. The table below displays the specs of the four chips as well as their price.
