MSI Summit E16 Flip Evo (A12M) – Top 5 Pros and Cons

MSI’s Summit laptops have always provided quality and performance. They are pretty good-looking as well, which doesn’t hurt. Today we have a larger Summit device, which still tries to maintain its weight and thickness in check. This is why we have the Alder Lake P-series of processors instead of the more temperamental H-series, which needs extra cooling needs. There are also quality display options, with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a high 165Hz refresh rate.

Without wasting any more time, here are LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the MSI Summit E16 Flip Evo (A12M).

MSI Summit E16 Flip Evo (A12M): Full Specs / In-depth Review

3 reasons to BUY the MSI Summit E16 Flip Evo (A12M)

1. Design and build quality

The aluminum chassis is very sturdy, which is further enhanced by the glass display cover since this is a convertible and you need extra protection for the screen. The base does flex a little bit, but it is totally excusable when you factor in the 16.8 mm profile and the 1.90 kg weight. The design is minimal, with a matte black paint job and a low-key MSI logo.

On the sides, we see the I/O which covers a decent chunk of ground, with two Thunderbolt 4 ports, two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 2) ports, an HDMI port, a MicroSD card reader, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

2. Battery life

With the P-series processors and an 82Wh battery, the laptop lasts for 12 hours and 30 minutes of Web browsing, or 12 hours and 9 minutes of video playback, which is really balanced. Now, we conduct the battery tests with Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

3. Display quality

Both the FHD+ and QHD+ options offer great qualities. We went for the more modest option, which still delivers big, with comfortable viewing angles and a 307 nits peak brightness. The contrast ratio is a bit low, however, the display still covers 100% of the sRGB color gamut.

The colors also get really accurate with our Design and Gaming profile, reaching a dE value of 1.2. Here are our test results with both the stock settings (left) and with our profile applied (right).

Praca biurowa

Projektowanie i gry

Health-Guard

2 reasons NOT to buy the MSI Summit E16 Flip Evo (A12M)

1. Upgradeability

For a 16-inch notebook, we expected better upgradeability. The device comes with soldered quad-channel LPDDR5 RAM. The storage is accessible through one M.2 PCIe x4 slot that fits Gen 4 drives.

Here is our detailed teardown video, which shows how to access the SSD.

2. Charger

The Evo model specifically comes with a 65W charging brick, which limits the amount of power that the CPU can access. This also causes a drop in performance, since there isn’t enough juice.

You can see how in our stress test, the processor runs really really cool, despite Prime95 pushing it to its limits. Since there’s a lack of power, the CPU can’t clock as high and heat up properly.
