Chromebooks make a lot of sense until you reach a certain price point, where you can get a Windows laptop with decent hardware and experience a fully functioning OS with all the bells and whistles. Such will be the status quo until Google makes ChromeOS on par with Windows, or puts out another OS with more functionality that can compete and take advantage of more powerful hardware.

Design

The design is definitely inspired by HP’s more expensive ENVY series. This can mainly be seen when you look at the base, as the keyboard is slightly lower than the palm rest. The laptop should be made of metal, or at least have some metal on it, considering the price. We have a classic silver finish with a glossy HP logo on the back. In terms of portability, the laptop weighs in at 1.47 kg and has a profile of 16.51 mm, so it’s kept pretty light and nimble.

Display

The display selection includes an HD TN panel, which you should outright skip and focus on the Full HD IPS panel, which can come either with or without a touchscreen, along with 250 nits of brightness, but only around half of the sRGB color gamut.

Specifications and features

In terms of hardware, the base configuration offers an Intel Celeron 6305, with only 2 cores and 2 threads. Next is the Pentium Gold 7505, also with 2 cores, but 4 threads. From there, you can pick between five Tiger Lake U-series processors, starting with the Core i3-1115G4 and going as high as the Core i7-1185G7. All of these chips will provide snappy performance in ChromeOS, with the top options being a bit overkill, if we have to be honest. For graphics, there are only integrated options, but since you’d hardly do anything that demanding on the device, they are an adequate option.

As for features, we see a set of stereo speakers on the base, which are provided by Bang & Olufsen. HP has had a long relationship with the brand, so it’s safe to say they’ve finally figured it out when it comes to laptop speakers. There’s also a fingerprint reader, as well as a decently-sized 58Wh battery, which should last for a while, especially with these efficient chips.

In terms of ports, there are two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 2) ports, two USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) ports, an HDMI 2.0 port, a MicroSD card reader, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.
