First benchmark of the upcoming 6-core “Coffee Lake-H” mobile CPU
Intel officially launched its 8th generation more than a week ago and since the focus is on the Kaby Lake-R chips as there is no information about the other. But now we might be looking at the first ever benchmark of a Coffee Lake chip. GeekBench’s database is giving us a first glance at an upcoming 6-core Core i7 chip based on the Coffee Lake architecture.
We are looking at a 6 core 12 thread (Hyper-Threading) CPU with a base clock speed of 2.60 GHz and 9MB of L3 cache. Intel’s approach is to ditch the dual-core processors and move onto higher core/thread count. However, to compensate for the higher core count and keep power-consumption low, the base clock speed is kept low at 2.60 GHz. Nonetheless, Boost clocks are higher than before reaching 4.00 GHz as we saw on the Core i7-8550U.
With this introductory done, we can easily explain the results that the unnamed Core i7 CPU scored in GeekBench. We see a single-core score of 4013 points which isn’t anything groundbreaking and it is very similar to last gen’s Core i7-7700HQ. This is to be expected because of the fairly low base clock. However, the new 8th gen CPU shines in multi-core performance which shouldn’t be a surprise. It scored 19129 points which is around 40% higher than the Core i7-7700HQ.
What does that mean for users? If you are doing photo and video editing and rendering as a whole (or other CPU intensive work) this change to more cores will be more than welcome for you. However, if you are a casual gamer we don’t think that it’s worth the upgrade. Nonetheless, we are very excited to see the new chips and test them for ourselves.
