MSI Prestige 14 (A12M): Full Specs / In-depth Review

3 reasons to BUY the MSI Prestige 14 (A12M)

1. Design and build quality

Similar to Prestige 15, the smaller notebook is made entirely from aluminum. However, MSI looks to have cheapened out and used very thin sheets of the material, resulting in a lack of structural support. This leaves both the lid and the base prone to flex. On the other hand, the laptop is as light as a feather, weighing 1.29 kg and having a profile of 15.9 mm. The chassis has a lever mechanism on the lid, which is becoming more and more popular these days and is an addition that we love to see.

2. Display quality

The 14-inch has a FHD resolution, but you can also get a UHD panel, which is a bit overkill, especially at this display size. The FHD panel has comfortable viewing angles, a peak brightness of 327 nits, and a 1740:1 contrast ratio. It also covers 98% of the sRGB color gamut and shows no PWM usage at all brightness levels.

The color accuracy also gets really good once we apply our Design and Gaming profile, lowering its dE value down to 0.9. Here are the results of our test with the stock settings (left) and with our profile applied (right).

Buy our profiles

Since our profiles are tailored for each individual display model, this article and its respective profile package are meant for MSI Prestige 14 (A12M) configurations with 14.0″ AUO B140HAN06.2 (AUO623D) (FHD, 1920 × 1080) IPS.

Kontorsarbete

3. Performance

The laptop crushes it in testing, with the Core i5-1240P reaching a pretty high score in 3D Rendering, despite being the least powerful option in the spec sheet. It’s only slower than the Ryzen 7 5800U, but only in 3D Rendering. In Photoshop, it’s a speedster, being the quickest among its peers.

2 reasons NOT to buy the MSI Prestige 14 (A12M)

1. Cooling

The cooling solution here is much simpler, with two heat pipes, one fan, and a heat sink.

Max CPU load

Intel Core i5-1240P (28W TDP)0:02 – 0:10 sec0:15 – 0:30 sec10:00 – 15:00 min
MSI Prestige 14 (A12M)3.18 GHz @ 2.46 GHz @ 71°C @ 64W2.22 GHz @ 1.97 GHz @ 73°C @ 37W1.79 GHz @ 1.69 GHz @ 81°C @ 31W
Lenovo Yoga 7i (14″, 2022)3.30 GHz @ 2.56 GHz @ 76°C @ 64W2.95 GHz @ 2.38 GHz @ 90°C @ 53W2.13 GHz @ 1.82 GHz @ 68°C @ 31W

Compared to the only other laptop equipped with the same CPU, the Prestige 14 falls apart, running at lower speeds and higher temperatures. Despite that, it still delivers very good performance, which is another evidence of Alder Lake’s effectiveness.

Comfort during full load

The device gets warm and loud, but what s worse is that the heat spreads along a large part of the base. It maxes out at 45.2°C.

2. Upgradeability

The upgradeability is lacking with only soldered RAM. However, you do get quad-channel LPDDR4x memory along with only one M.2 PCIe x4 slot that fits Gen 4 SSDs.

Here is our detailed teardown video, which shows how to access the insides for upgrades and general maintenance.
