Quick look at Moto Z Play – first impressions, camera, performance
We recently informed you that Moto Z Play is in our office for testing and we now working very hard on its comprehensive review. However, you know that traditionally we present a short article for those of you who are less patient. In this short publication we discuss our initial impressions of the model in question.
If you happen to show interest in Moto Z Play, you can check its current price and availability here: http://amzn.to/2fHpm1o
Moto Z Play will make a good impression on you as soon as you take it in your hands thanks to its design featuring a metal frame and stylish glass back. A small drawback, we must confess, is that it easily retains fingerprints. Additionally, the model is based on its higher end Moto Z brother and you can find the most notable construction differences in the slightly bulkier body of 7mm and weight of 165 grams. However, these are not by any measure worrying values, on the contrary. You will also be presented with fingerprint scanner and USB Type-C port. Also, the phone’s back has a section with 16 pins which are there to establish connection with the so called Moto modules universal for all Moto Z models (future morels included). What also impresses us is the easy attachment and detachment of these modules. We shall discuss them in greater detail in the coming review.
Moto Z Play has a 5.5-inch Full HD display with pixel denisty of 403 ppi, or, in other words, good image detail. Thanks to the Super AMOLED panel the images appear contrasty and bright and the settings menu also allows you to use a mode with more saturated colors.
The mobile CPU which is employed by the smartphone is the Snapdragon 625, featuring eight Cortex-A53 cores ticking at up to 2.00GHz. It is accompanied by the Adreno 506 GPU and 3GB of RAM. You may also wish to know that the available internal storage is 32GB, 8GB of which are occupied by system files. On the other hand, you have a microSD card slot. Performance-wise, we have already conducted a couple of our performance tests, and you can have a look at the results below – Geekbench 3 (on the left) and 3DMark Ice Unlimited (on the right).
Moto Z Play’s battery is 3510mAh which is certainly nice even for a 5.5-incher. We have not conducted all of our tests yet but from what we’ve seen thus far we can conclude that its endurance is more than good.
Software-wise, we are dealing with Android 6.0 Marshmallow but you can expect a future update to Android 7.0 Nougat. Other than that, it’s stock Android experience that you’re getting without any added UI which is common for Moto models. Nonetheless, there is a Moto app which hides a good number of features which are mainly about gesture and voice control of your device.
Also, this bad boy comes with a 16MP main camera whose aperture value is f/2.0 and it also has autofocus plus 4K video recording capabilities. The camera menu does not have many modes and settings but we shall mention all of the available ones in the coming review. We would like to present to your attention two of the first test shots we took so that you may see what this camera can do.
