[Specs and Info] ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 (GX650) – better than ever

Last year, the Zephyrus Duo 15 SE (GX551) was one of the best-performing notebooks that we tested. The design that introduced a secondary display not only looks cool but also improves productivity and benefits the performance, due to having an open vent right below it, allowing fresh air to enter the system.

The new version gets a new hinge mechanism, some changes to the appearance, and a more productivity-focused display. We also can’t forget the hardware upgrade, with the laptop making the jump from Zen 3 to Zen 3+ with the Ryzen 9 6980HX and the availability of the RTX 3070 Ti and the RTX 3080 Ti.

Today we are giving you a quick overview of the ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 (GX650).

ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 (GX650): Full Specs

Design

The new notebook weighs 2.50 kg, which is pretty much the same as the older device. While you may think this is a lot, keep in mind that you have a second display, along with the connectors and cables, along with the hinge mechanism, which adds up. For the type of device that it is, the weight is more than acceptable. The lid design is different now, with an RGB stripe devising it into two sections along the diagonal.

The lower section is decorated with dots, while the upper triangle has the ROG logo that lights up and a matte finish. The base has the second display, the touchpad, which is found to the side and can double as a NumPad, and the keyboard. The problem is that they are still at the edge of the base, leaving 0 room for your wrists, so you will have to use the provided wrist rest, which is another component that you have to bring with you.

Display

The main display offers three different IPS panels with MiniLED backlighting, all with a 16-inch diagonal and a 16:10 aspect ratio. The base model has a 4K UHD+ panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and an interesting technology that can bind 4 pixels into one large pixel, lowering the resolution to FHD+, while increasing the refresh rate to 240Hz. Next is a QHD+ panel with a 165Hz refresh rate. Interestingly enough, both panels have 100% DCI-P3 coverage, a 3ms response time, Free Sync support, and Pantone validation for color accuracy.

The ScreenPad Plus has a 14-inch diagonal, an IPS panel, and the same resolution of 3840 x 1100p, regardless of what main display you choose. The panel can be used for a variety of purposes, with ASUS giving several examples. In games, you can see achievements and missions on the secondary panel. Extra space if you’re programming or doing professional work. You can also place your chat there if you’re live streaming.

Specifications and features

The laptop has a single CPU option, with the Ryzen 9 6980HX, which offers 8 cores, 16 threads, and a boost speed of 5.00GHz. While we have no performance numbers as of now, we expect the best from AMD’s flagship laptop CPU.

For graphics, we have the RTX 3060, RTX 3080, RTX 3070 Ti, and the RTX 3080 Ti, two latter two of which are brand new and supposedly offer more performance both in games and in productivity tasks, such as video editing, 2D, and 3D Rendering. We go more in-depth about them here.

In terms of cooling, this laptop’s processor gets a liquid metal solution from Thermal Grizzly, that supposedly has 17x better thermal conductivity. The cooling setup has 5 heat pipes, 4 copper heat spreaders, and two fans that have very thin 0.1 mm blades, with each fan getting 84 of them.

The battery has a size of 90Wh and fast charging, which cal fill it up to 50% in 30 minutes. The base features a set of 6 speakers with Dolby Atmos support and a Triple Array microphone that has two-way AI Noise-cancellation.
