ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED (UP3404) review – premium sturdy transformer with a stunning OLED display and powerful hardware

Design and construction

This small fella has an all-metal build that is also very sturdy. The display is protected by a Gorilla Glass coating and that’s why the lid feels stable. The same applies to the base where we observed almost zero bends. The design is stylish and modern, especially if you get a device in a Foggy Silver color. This highlights the interesting geometric lines on the lid. The matte finish isn’t a fingerprint magnet. Ponder Blue color scheme is also available.

The laptop stops the scales at 1.5 kilos and the profile thickness is 15.9 mm. So, this is a sturdy, light, and thin machine.

You can use this notebook as a standard clamshell laptop. When the display is turned off, it looks completely dark which contrasts very well with the silver base.

The panel is glossy and the bezels around it are as narrow as possible if you don’t count the lower one. Above the screen is placed a Full HD Web camera with an IR face recognition scanner. We would like to see at least an e-shutter option but this fella lacks this feature.

On the bottom left corner of the display, you’ll find a shortcut for the ScreenXpert app which has a good amount of options that can be customized.

This is a convertible laptop, because of the 360-degree hinge mechanism, you can quickly transform the notebook into a tablet. It can also lay flat on your desk, or you can use it in a tent or stand mode.

The ErgoLift mechanism lifts the backside from the ground when the lid gets past a certain angle. This enhances the cooling capabilities of the laptop and also the ergonomics during typing.

The full-sized backlit keyboard is suitable for typing. It features large keycaps (except the Arrow keys) with long key travel (this was unexpected given the thin profile) and good feedback (but not perfect). Still, the board is quiet while using it and there is zero flex around its deck even when you type fast and harsh. The touchpad doubles as a NumberPad which is very handy if you want to use the device in an office.

The ASUS NumberPad 2.0 can be summoned very quickly by pressing the dedicated symbol in the top right corner of the pad. Using the virtual keys is a joy because they are well-lit and big in size. The touchpad is also large, smooth, and accurate. Working with it is a pleasure. By the way, this transformer lacks a fingerprint reader. Yeah, it’s not even optional.

On the bottom plate, we can see four rubber feet, two speaker cutouts, and a ventilation grille. The heat is exhausted through a vent on the left side of the laptop. This is good news because a lot of other convertibles feature a back-placed vent so the hot air is reaching the display. This isn’t an issue here.

Ports

On the left, you’ll find just a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 2) port. On the other side of the laptop, you can see an HDMI 2.1 TMDS, an Audio combo jack, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports (both with DisplayPort and power delivery capabilities).
