日本HP Victus 16 (16-r0000) review – has potent cooling and color-accurate display
Design and construction
The design is similar to the HP Victus 15 (15-fb0000) and to some other machines from the same brand like the Pavilion Gaming laptops. The device seems modern and the only thing that is hinting at its gaming nature is the big “V” logo on the lid. The starting weight is 2.32 kg and the profile thickness is 23.9 mm – normal dimensions for a gaming laptop.
Sadly, you can’t open the lid with a single hand because the hinges are too stiff. When the lid is closed, it’s stable except for the center but when the lid is opened, it’s bouncy and flexible. We’ve seen worse though.
The bezels around the display are thin if we don’t count the “chin”.
Above the panel is placed a 1080p Web camera with a privacy shutter and temporal noise reduction which is nice to see in a gaming notebook.
The base houses the backlit keyboard with a NumPad. The feedback is clicky and the key travel is average – overall, the board is comfortable for gaming and typing. There are five different types of keyboards so keep an eye on the specs before buying the laptop. Our board option is called “moonstone grey keyboard”. The base is stable for the most part, we observed slight bends in the upper left zone of the right palm rest area and the zone around the Arrow keys is a bit flexible but nothing major.
The touchpad isn’t the biggest one out there and also its surface isn’t the smoothest. However, the pad is accurate which is very important.
On the bottom plate, we can see two speaker cutouts and a huge ventilation grill. The hot air is exhausted through a large vent on the back of the base and through a smaller vent on the left. The big vent aims toward the hinges so part of the hot air reaches the bottom part of the display during gaming.
Ports
On the left, you can see a LAN port, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port that supports HP Sleep and Charge, and an Audio jack. On the right, you’ll find the power connector, an HDMI 2.1, two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports with charging capabilities, and a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) port with Power Delivery, DisplayPort 1.4, and HP Sleep and Charge functionality.
