Lenovo Legion Slim 5i Gen 8 (16″ Intel, 2023) review – compact gaming device with powerful hardware

Design and construction

Yep, we can clearly see the Legion genes by the looks of the laptop. The lid is made of aluminum and the rest is quality plastic that feels good to the touch. The rounded edges on all four sides contribute to an up-to-date design.

As we said earlier, the least powerful configurations are thinner. We got a 19.7-21.9mm profile thickness for the up to RTX 4050 machines and a 19.7-25.2mm profile for the RTX 4060 and RTX 4070-based notebooks. The weight is 2.4o kg.

Opening the lid with one hand is mission possible here, and by doing this you can see the thin bezels around the matte panel. We observed some slight bends when we tried to twist the lid but nothing serious, most likely you aren’t going to notice this during normal usage. The lid goes also to a fully flat position (180 degrees) which is great. Just like some other gaming laptops in this price category, this one features a 1080p Web camera. We can also spot an E-shutter positioned on the right side of the notebook.

On the base, we can see the keyboard with a NumPad and big arrow keys. There is also a 4-zone RGB backlight that glows in white color. The keyboard is comfortable for both typing and gaming – the key travel is long enough and the feedback is clicky.

We are not surprised that the touchpad has the well-known Mylar surface and its size is 75 by 120mm. The pad isn’t among the biggest ones out there but it’s smooth (not glass-smooth though), accurate, and tracking is on point too.

The bottom panel houses the speaker cutouts and a large ventilation grill. The hot air has been pushed through four vents – two of them are positioned on the back, and one on each side of the notebook.

Ports

On the left side, we can spot two USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) ports (both support DisplayPort 1.4 output and the former can be used for Power Delivery up to 140W) and an Audio jack. On the right, you get an SD card reader and the E-shutter switch. Last but not least, the back side is well populated with two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 2) ports (the former comes with an “always-on” function), a LAN port, an HDMI 2.1 connector, and a power plug.

I’m curious about the 60W GPU limit on this model. There are any possibility of Nvidia change this in a future update? Or this is something that Lenovo controls? Or they probably won’t change that? Seems insane you advertise the laptop with a up 140W and limit it to run at less than half of that.
