Acer TravelMate P2 (TMP216-51) review – its upgradability and cooling are very good

Design and construction

Since that’s a business laptop, the design isn’t eye-catching. However, the device looks modern and stealthy in grey color. It’s not a surprise that the build is plastic. This results in a decent weight for a 16-incher – 1.87 kg. The profile thickness is okay – 19.9 – 22.9 mm.

It’s great to see that you can open the lid with one hand but it also flexes a lot. The situation with the rigidity of the base is a bit better but the whole area below the keyboard can be bent slightly when you press it a bit harder or while typing fast and very harshly.

On the bright side, the bezels around the display are thin. Above the panel is placed a 720p or optional 1080p IR Web camera with HDR functionality.

Both units have privacy shutters and support TNR (Temporal Noise Reduction).

You open the lid up to 180 degrees.

The keyboard is spill-resistant and it has a NumberPad but the backlight is optional. The unit is comfortable for work, the key travel is long and the feedback is clicky. The two DTS Audio speakers are positioned on the sides of the board. The touchpad has an OceanGlass surface that feels almost like real glass coverage. The optional fingerprint reader is placed in the top left section of the pad which offers nice accuracy.

The bottom plate is home to two rubber feet, a battery reset pinhole, and a big ventilation grill. The small hole on the left side of the grill is part of the Acer Dust Defender system. The heat is guided through a vent on the back that aims at the lower bezel of the panel so this additionally heats the display when the CPU is under max load.

Ports

On the left, you can see the power connector, a Thunderbolt 4 port with DisplayPort and charging capabilities (65W), an HDMI 2.1, and a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port with a power-off charging function. The microSD Card reader is located on the front. The right side houses the Kensington lock slot, LAN, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and an Audio combo jack.
