ASUS ROG Strix G17 G713P (2023) review – everything could be perfect if it isn’t for one thing

Design and construction

In contrast to the TUF Gaming A17 (FA707, 2023), the ROG Strix G17 G713P is a bit heavier and thicker. Respectively, this means a weight of 2.80 kg and a profile of 23.4-30.8mm.

Both the lid and the base are pretty rigid, even though only the former is made out of metal. On the bright side, the plastic base features a very smooth texture, one that is really pleasant on your wrists.

Naturally, the lid opens easily with one hand. The hinges are smooth, while the bezels around the matte display are pretty thin. Well, with the exception of the bottom one. Nevertheless, the top one features an HD Web camera.

Now, the base looks a bit spacious, but that’s because you simply can’t put a noticeably larger keyboard. Yes, the NumberPad section and the Arrow keys are a bit small, but the general comfort of the unit is pretty good. Not only that, but it has a Per-Key RGB backlight.

Its touchpad is one of the best ones put on a gaming laptop. That’s thanks to its smooth surface, accurate tracking, and incredibly fast response.

Now, the bottom panel is home to the two speaker cutouts and the ventilation grill. Hot air, respectively, is blown out of the machine through two vents on the back, and one vent on either side of the laptop.

Ports

On the left side, there are two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports and an Audio jack. Then, on the right, you get absolutely nothing, while the back houses the two USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) ports. They both support DisplayPort output, but the one on the right also features the Power Delivery function. In addition, you get an HDMI 2.1 FRL connector and a LAN port.

I would say that the biggest “Con” is that it doesn’t come with USB4 or even Thunderbolt-4. These cannot be easily installed as an upgrade. But also there is the fact that they’re trying to pass this off as a Mid Tier gaming rig but it’s actually only a little better than the RTX4060 which has the same amount of VRAM for less money (8gb). You should NOT buy a gaming computer with less than 12GB of VRAM today. Honestly if you can’t afford the 4080 then you’d do fine with a 4060.
