In this case, we've built a RAID configuration which we'll cover later. Of course, you could skip this chapter for future reference. Watch our video demonstrating how to open and upgrade the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 G733 (2023): Step 1: Opening the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 G733 (2023) Ensure the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 G733 (2023) is powered off and placed on a soft, clean surface to prevent scratches or damage. Remove the 11 Philips-head screws from the bottom of the laptop. Note that the screw in the bottom right corner remains attached to the panel, lifting the edge slightly to aid in starting the prying process. Use a plastic tool to gently pry the bottom panel off, starting from the lifted edge. When that is done, raise the panel a little bit from the front side, and detach the battery connector from the mainboard. The next step is to carefully pull out two thin flat ribbon connectors that are powering the front RGB stripe. Hint: Proceed with caution to avoid damaging the internal clips or the laptop casing. Step 2: Battery Removal The battery isn’t fixed to the base with screws because there is a dedicated socket for it on the inside of the bottom plate that keeps the unit in place. Disconnect the battery connector from the motherboard carefully to avoid any damage. Just lift away the 90.61Wh unit from the chassis. Caution: Handle the battery and its connector with care to avoid any damage. Memory Upgrade Locate the two SODIMM slots that support DDR5 RAM for memory upgrades. Write The pre-installed SSD is the 2TB SAMSUNG MZVL22T0HBLB-00B00 SSD, offering 6.7 GB/s and 4.96GB/s sequential read and write speeds, respectively. The easiest way to improve it is by swapping the pre-installed drive with a more powerful one. You may want to use our Top M.2 SSDs Performance Rankings and choose the best drive you can afford. In addition to Sequential Read/Write, take note of IOPS 4K Read/Write and Latency Read/Write as well. It's important to note that loading games, for instance, mainly depends on reading a massive number of small files, where RAID 0 has limited impact. Its strength lies in reading/writing/moving large files, which can be beneficial in certain work scenarios like navigating through a high-quality timeline in a video editing app, saving large projects, etc. Although RAID 1 doubles the life of your SSDs and keeps your data safe (if one of the drive fails, the other one still has your files), it has a major drawback: it halves your total disk capacity. Write Speed 4.96 GB/s 12.3 GB/s +148% PREPARING CLEAN WINDOWS OS If your laptop comes with a pre-installed Windows OS, you can skip this chapter. Step 1: Obtain a Flash drive with a minimum of 8GB capacity. Step 2: Ensure there's no important data on the Flash drive, as it will be formatted. Step 3: Download the latest Windows 11 ISO from our recommended website: https://os.click/. Step 4: Prepare the Flash drive using Rufus: Download, install, and open Rufus: https://rufus.ie/en/. Ensure the correct Flash Drive is selected (disconnect other USB devices if necessary). Click 'Select' and choose the ISO file. Click 'START' to begin the process. Rufus will offer several options; make your selection or follow the example settings shown below. Optional Step for RAID configurations: Copy the Intel RST driver If you're building a RAID configuration, you may need to copy the RST-F6floppy folder from the MAX OUT archive to your Windows Installation Flash drive. Optional Step: Copy the 'Drivers' partition Some configurations have a partition containing all necessary drivers for the OS. If you plan to replace the factory SSD it's advisable to copy the Drivers partition contents first. If using the same Flash drive for the Windows OS, ensure it has at least 8GB of free space after the Windows installation. Here’s the process: 1. Boot from Windows Installation Media: - Insert your Windows installation USB drive into the laptop. - Restart your laptop and press F12 or Del to access the boot manager. - Choose to boot from the USB flash drive. 2. Access Command Prompt: - Once the Windows Setup starts, press Shift + F10 to open the Command Prompt. 3. Prepare the Flash Drive: - In Command Prompt, create a new folder on the flash drive for the drivers. For example, if your flash drive is E:\, use: mkdir E:\Drivers 4. Copy Contents from D:\ Partition: - Use the xcopy command. For example, to copy from D:\ to E:\Drivers: xcopy D:\*.* E:\Drivers /E /H /K This command copies all contents, including subdirectories and files (even hidden and system files). 5. Finish the Process: - After the copying is complete, type exit to close Command Prompt: exit - Safely shut down the computer (use shutdown /s in Command Prompt): shutdown /s INSTALLING WINDOWS OS If your laptop comes with a pre-installed Windows OS, proceed to Step 4. Step 1: Use the Flash Drive Insert the flash drive into the computer and follow the on-screen instructions. Note: If you have a RAID configuration, the SSD drive(s) might not be visible. To resolve this, click Load driver ➤ Browse, and navigate to the “RST-F6floppy” folder you copied earlier. Click Next. The driver will install in a few seconds, and the RAID setup should appear as a single drive. If the drive is still not visible, you may need to download the latest Intel RST drivers from intel.com. If multiple versions are available, choose the “Floppy” variant. If only an .EXE file is available, you'll need to extract the driver. Here’s how: Open CMD and navigate to the location of the SetupRST.exe file (in Windows 11, open the folder in File Explorer, click on the address bar, type cmd before the address, and hit Enter). Enter this command: SetupRST.exe -extractdrivers SetupRST_extracted This will extract the drivers in the same folder: production -> Windows -> xxx (number) -> Drivers. Copy this folder to the Flash Drive. Step 2: Create Partition Create a new partition and click Next. Step 3: General Settings The PC will restart automatically. You can remove the flash drive at this point. Now, select your region and keyboard layout. Then, click I don’t have internet, followed by Continue with limited setup. Optional Steps: If you didn't follow the PREPARING OS chapter exactly, or if you didn't prepare your flash drive with Rufus, or if you're setting up a pre-installed Windows OS, the “I don’t have internet” option may be missing. Don’t worry. If you prefer not to connect your PC to a Microsoft account, use no@thankyou.com as the email address at the “Microsoft Account Sign in” screen. On the following screen, enter 0 as the password. You'll encounter an error, but this will allow you to bypass this step. You might want to decline all additional features offered during setup. Congratulations, Windows is now cleanly installed. Let’s proceed with the setup. POST-INSTALL WINDOWS SETUP Step 1: Installing Drivers Option 1: Installing Drivers Manually If your laptop doesn’t have a Drivers partition, download the necessary drivers from ASUS’s official website: https://rog.asus.com/laptops/rog-strix/rog-strix-scar-17-2023-series/helpdesk_download/ The recommended driver installation sequence is: Chipset Integrated Graphics NVIDIA Graphics Audio LAN Card Reader Wireless LAN Bluetooth Touchpad ME (Intel Management Engine) Radio Switch Others Alternatively, you can install drivers through the Device Manager. Option 2: Installing Drivers from ASUS Armoury Crate. Download the app via the official support page of the laptop. Download and install the app. Open it and go to "Settings" - "Update Center". Click on "Check for Updates" Select "Update All" or you can also choose to install only specific drivers. Step 2: Gaming Dependencies Install runtimes required for most games and apps. 2.1. DirectX: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/Download/confirmation.aspx?id=35 ⚠️ Be sure to uncheck "Install the Bing Bar". 2.2. Visual C++ Redistributable Runtimes For a comprehensive installation, use the All-in-one setup from Techpowerup: https://www.techpowerup.com/download/visual-c-redistributable-runtime-package-all-in-one/ 1. Extract the archive. 2. Run install_all.bat. 3. If Microsoft Defender SmartScreen blocks it, select More info > Run anyway. 4. Approve each User Account Control prompt (approximately 12 times). 5. Done. Step 3: Checking the Stock Results 1. Download and open GPU-Z. 2. Install and run 3DMark. Test with Wild Life Extreme and Time Spy, noting your results. 3. In GPU-Z’s Sensors tab, click twice on each temperature box (Core / Hot Spot / Memory) to see the highest recorded temperatures. Acceptable temperatures are 90°C and below for "GPU Temperature", up to 95ºC for "Hot Spot", and up to 100ºC for "Memory temperature". Higher temperatures can be stable too but require more frequent maintenance. Step 4: Disabling Core Isolation / VMP For gamers prioritizing performance, consider disabling Memory Integrity and Virtual Machine Platform. 3.1. Press the Win key and type 'Core Isolation'. Switch off Memory Integrity and restart your computer. 3.2. Press the Win key again and type 'Windows features'. Unselect Virtual Machine Platform (if selected). Step 5: Removing Bloatware 5.1. Pre-installed Windows OS: If your computer came with Windows pre-installed, you likely have unnecessary bloatware. Uninstall these apps from (Win key -> Add or Remove programs). The default bloatware is Bing Weather, Candy Crush Friends Saga, Microsoft Skype App, Netflix, Xbox App, Zune Music, but you'll probably see more apps that you don't need. 🧠 For advanced users: Use Bulk Crap Uninstaller by Klocman for mass uninstalls. 5.2. Clean Windows Installation: Primarily, consider removing OneDrive. Open CMD and execute this command: for %a in ("SysWOW64" "System32") do (if exist "%windir%\%~a\OneDriveSetup.exe" ("%windir%\%~a\OneDriveSetup.exe" /uninstall)) && reg delete "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{018D5C66-4533-4307-9B53-224DE2ED1FE6}" /f > nul 2>&1 Check for other unnecessary apps in (Win key -> Add or Remove programs). Step 6: Managing Startup Apps Review and manage apps that run on startup, especially after uninstalling bloatware. Press the Win key and type 'Startup Apps'. Turn off unnecessary apps. 🗒️ Notes: - Realtek HD Audio Universal service is part of Realtek's audio driver package. - Disable Microsoft Edge's startup if you don’t use it. 🧠 For advanced users: Use Autoruns for a comprehensive view of all startup apps and services. Step 7: Visual Cleaning Customize the taskbar by disabling new features and buttons. Right-click on the taskbar -> Taskbar settings, and set to Off as preferred. Step 8: Installing Recommended Apps Here are our recommendations for default apps: 🎬 Media Player - VLC 🌐 Internet Browser - Chrome / Firefox ⬇️ BitTorrent Client - qBittorrent 🗜️ File Archiver - 7-zip Opt for open-source software whenever possible. OVERCLOCKING/UNDERVOLTING THE GPU Step 1: Switch to Performance Mode / Discrete Graphics Mode For optimal performance, ensure the dedicated GPU is always active. 1. Open ASUS Armoury Crate. 2. Power presets can be found in the bottom left section of the Home tab. 3. Select "Performance". 4. Click on the Ultimate GPU mode (dGPU-only). 5. You can find the graphics card modes within the "GPU Power Saving" section. 6. Restart the laptop. Step 2: Installing and Setting Up MSI Afterburner 1. Download and install MSI Afterburner. 2. Copy the Profiles folder from the LM MAXOUT archive to C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner. 3. Open MSI Afterburner and activate the profile by clicking on the button "1" on the right, then click Apply. This profile worked best for our test laptop. However, results may vary, so a stress test is recommended. Step 3: Quick Stress Test Use Unigine Superposition or the TimeSpy benchmark in 3DMark for stress testing. Also, run demanding games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Control, or Metro Exodus for several minutes. Optional Step: Troubleshooting BSOD or GFX_ERROR are common results of an overly high Core clock, while too high Memory clock often causes artifacts. To fix these issues: 1. Open MSI Afterburner. 2. Lower the Core clock by 15-30 MHz or the Memory clock by 50-100 MHz. If undervolted, the Core clock will read "Curve". Adjust the voltage/frequency curve as needed. Repeat benchmarks/games until Errors/Artifacts stop and temperatures are acceptable. Optional Step: Pushing the Overclock Higher If stable, try increasing the Core clock by 15-30 MHz or the Memory clock by 50-100 MHz. Repeat benchmarks/games until you reach the performance limit or temperatures become too high. Step 4: Extended Stress Test After achieving stability, conduct an extended stress test with games like Red Dead Redemption 2 or 3DMark's TimeSpy Extreme or FireStrike Extreme stress tests. Step 5: Save Your Profile Once satisfied with the performance and temperatures: 1. Save the profile in MSI Afterburner. 2. Set MSI Afterburner to run at Windows startup with your profile. "C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner\MSIAfterburner.exe" /Profile1 /Q Step 6: Check for Profile Conflicts Restart your computer and run benchmarks again. If scores are lower than expected, check for conflicts with MSI Afterburner and other apps, adjusting the startup delay or settings as needed. PERFORMANCE COMPARISON Compare before and after modification results, ensuring performance gains with stable operation. 6% performance jump for a high-end GPU is a very good result! You just have to Drag & Drop the profiles into the app. That’s it! Now you can easily switch modes and take advantage of the PWM Free Brightness Slider in the Health-Guard section. Design and Gaming profile Now let's see how big is the difference between the real colors and the ones you’ll see on the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 G733 (2023). We measure that distance in DeltaE – the bigger the number, the more different they look. For the next illustration, we’ve chosen 24 common colors like dark and light skin, blue sky, green grass, etc. Values below 2.0 are considered suitable for color-sensitive work, while values below 1.0 mean that the colors are indistinguishable from the real ones to the naked eye. Since it's custom-tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate (they may seem strange at first but after a few minutes our brain will start recognizing them as accurate ones - that's how Health-Guard differs from alternatives like f.lux). Now the profile has a higher color temperature which makes it suitable for working through the whole day (not only at night) and simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced. *Please keep your Windows brightness slider at its max position, and use the LM profiles’ integrated “No PWM brightness slider” for controlling the luminance. Pro Tip: As the Health-Guard profile simulates paper and has as accurate as possible colors, it could be a great tool for prepress designers! Office Work aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature, and perceptually accurate colors.
