Lenovo ThinkPad P16s Gen 1 review – this is NOT a workstation

Design and construction

As usual, this device comes in two iterations. It can be found with plastic, glass fiber, carbon fiber composite lid, and plastic base, or an aluminum lid and a plastic base. The difference in weight is negligible – 1.80 vs 1.83 kg. Both of the options, however, are more than 1 kg lighter than the ThinkPad P16 Gen 1.

Moreover, the s-version is about 10mm thinner than the regular model. This makes it significantly easier to carry around. As you can imagine, this means it has a far inferior cooling solution inside. Nevertheless, the machine is pretty strong in terms of rigidity, as we found almost no flex in either the chassis or the lid.

Speaking of which, the lid cannot be opened with one hand. Thankfully, the bezels are pretty thin, with the top one featuring a Web camera. It comes in either 720p or 1080p resolution, and an optional IR face recognition scanner.

Moving to the base, the first thing that grabs our attention is the speaker grill. As you can see from the image below, the two speakers take a very small portion of the actual cutout. Below it, there is the fingerprint reader, which is embedded in the power button.

As usual, the Cream de la Creme of the laptop is its keyboard. This backlit unit is spill-resistant and offers long key travel, clicky feedback, and a NumberPad. Furthermore, it features a TrackPoint, which works together with the set of buttons above the touchpad. By the way, the aforementioned touchpad has a Mylar surface, which is pretty smooth. However, the size of 67 by 115 mm is not ideal, and the tracking could have been more responsive.

If we look at the bottom panel of the machine, we will find only one ventilation grill. It helps the single fan draw cool air. In contrast, the hot air is exhausted through the right side of the device.

Ports

On the left side, there is a LAN port, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI 2.0b connector, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and an Audio jack. Switch sides, and you will see the security lock slot, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and an optional Smart card reader. On the back, there is a SIM card tray.
