Samsung Odyssey G3 24G30A monitor – Specs, Pros / Cons: A Good Gamer, But a Great Creator When Paired with These Profiles

You wouldn’t think of Samsung as a gaming brand, however, they silently make some of the best gaming monitors that you can get your hands on. They have all the price brackets covered, and today we’re showcasing their Odyssey G3 24G30A, which is at the lower end.

However, it still provides an excellent platform for you to showcase your skills, as well as so much more. The Full HD VA panel fits on a 24-inch diagonal just perfectly, so for the people who don’t have a lot of desk space and need a more compact screen, this is a fantastic option that comes on a budget.

Samsung has equipped it with a 144Hz refresh rate as well as a 1ms response time, while also providing FreeSync Premium support, which is an upgrade over the standard FreeSync version.

For a retail price of 149$ right now on Amazon, you get incredible value, especially once you check out its color coverage and accuracy, courtesy of the LM Labs team, which created Display Profiles custom-tailored for this monitor, to not only increase its creator capabilities, but also improve your gaming and user experience as a whole. Drivers and Software

You can find the drivers for the monitor on Samsung’s Support Page. Besides the driver itself, there isn’t anything else, so you’re solely relying on the OSD menu for monitor control.

Design and Connectivity

Samsung’s Odyssey series is lowkey some of the best-designed monitors, both in terms of looks and overall functionality. The Odyssey G3 brings a black plastic exterior and a more industrial and rugged design. Despite its budget price, it also comes with one  of the best stands that you can get. It’s wider, so you feel like it’s super secure. It also moves in all directions, with Pivot, Swivel, Tilt, and Height Adjustment, so you can customize the ergonomics exactly to your liking. The bezels on it are quite thin, except for the chin, but since it keeps the OSD buttons and has some design elements, we can excuse it.

In terms of ports, you get a more simple selection, with an HDMI 1.4 port, a DisplayPort 1.2 port, and an audio jack.

Display quality, Buy our profiles, Verdict

A more budget option, a VA panel has some differences compared to IPS panels. They mainly manifest as having a significantly higher contrast ratio, while offering lower brightness. This means that in less-lit conditions, the image coming off of the screen will look better than on an IPS panel. And as we know well what the standard Gaming room looks like, dim lighting is a crucial part of that recipe. Now, let’s check out the results from our color tests, including both coverage and accuracy. This will ultimately tell if a monitor is suitable for Color-related work or not.

The correlated color temperature on a white screen after a Factory Reset in sRGB mode is 6650 K (Luminance 150 cd/m2 at 20% Brightness). The average gamma value is 2.18.

Color coverage

Here’s an illustration (Fig. 1). The whole “sail-shaped” map below consists of all the colors we can see, while the black crooked line shows all the colors from real-world scenes and nature around us.

Then, we’ve drawn some of the most important and interesting color spaces, compared to the colors the panel of Samsung Odyssey G3 24G30A can show:

Standard/For Web: sRGB – widely used color space for most consumer devices, ideal for Web design and development
For Print: AdobeRGB – used in professional photo editing, graphic design, and print
For Photographers/Video Editors: DCI-P3 – used in high-end film production, post-production, and digital cinema
Premium HDR: Rec.2020 – the widest consumer ITU color standard, covering a massive 75.8% of the visible spectrum, a benchmark for premium HDR content

Samsung Odyssey G3 24G30A: the yellow dashed triangle (– – – – – –) represents the range of colors this monitor can display. In our tests, we calculated the total color coverage of the monitor at 88% of the sRGB color gamut.

(Fig.1) Samsung Odyssey G3 24G30A covers 88% of the Web colors (sRGB)

This means that if the Samsung Odyssey G3 24G30A tries to show any color outside of its triangle, it will show the closest color to it that’s inside the triangle.

Color accuracy

Now let’s see how big is the difference between the real colors and the one you’ll see on the Samsung Odyssey G3 24G30A. We measure that distance in DeltaE – the bigger the number, the more different they look.

For the next illustration, we’ve chosen 24 common colors like dark and light skin, blue sky, green grass, etc.

Values below 2.0 are considered suitable for color-sensitive work. Before our calibration of the Samsung Odyssey G3 24G30A, the Average color accuracy was 3.9 dE (Fig. 2), and with our Web Design and Office Work profile, it lowered to 1.3 dE (Fig. 3). This makes for an exact 3X Increase in Accuracy, meaning the monitor is perfectly tailored for Creator work.

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom-tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate (they may seem strange at first but after a few minutes our brain will start recognizing them as accurate ones – that’s how Health-Guard differs from alternatives like f.lux).

Pro Tip: As the Health-Guard profile simulates paper and has as accurate as possible colors, it could be a great tool for prepress designers!

Gaming and Movies

We also have a third Gaming and Movies profile, which regulates the black colors, making dark areas in games and movies appear more visible, thus giving you a better viewing experience. Shooting at your opponent first can be a make-or-break moment, so make sure you’re best prepared with our profile.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

Verdict

With a current price of $149.99, the Samsung Odyssey G3 24G30A brings its A-game and really shines with all the value that it brings. It’s got a great design that doesn’t yield to any monitor, even ones that might be twice as expensive.

It has the gaming details dialed down very well, with a fast 144Hz refresh rate, a 1ms response time, and FreeSync Premium, so you’ve got a responsive, smooth, and tear-free screen for plenty of gaming hours. We can offer additional assistance with our Gaming and Movies profile, which regulates black colors, so you see everything that’s going on.

For when you’re not gaming, but creating content, our Web Design and Office Work profile makes the Odyssey G3 three times more accurate, with a dE value jump from 3.9 to 1.3. While the color coverage is a bit lower, 88% sRGB gamut coverage is still nothing to scoff at, as you’ll be able to do pretty well, regardless if it’s color-grading, graphic design, or video editing.

Lastly, the Health-Guard is there to reduce Blue Light and PWM (Flickering), as much as possible, so your eyes are always energized and healthy. Still, remember to take small breaks every hour or two.
