Lenovo refreshes its ThinkPad lineup for 2017 – brings some welcome changes

Lenovo has expanded significantly after the acquisition of IBM’s personal computer business back in 2005. The ThinkPad lineup was around prior to that but  following the acquisition it became one of the world’s most popular line of mobile computers.

ThinkPads are used by many people as their daily driver, however they are also preferred by many businesses for their versatility. The 2017 refresh of the lineup brings a gentle retouch and some new technologies.

Firstly, on the software side Lenovo have decided to switch to Microsoft Precision TouchPad drivers to ensure more consistent experience across devices. It’s good to see more and more companies switch to them as they are continuously being updated by Microsoft.

Another change in the software department is the switching to  Windows 10 Signature Edition image for the whole 2017 ThinkPad lineup. That is a welcome change for both home and enterprise users as they will get a clean operating system without any bloatware, which is not always wanted. We hope that this example will be followed by the other lineups.

Things become more interesting on the hardware side. The biggest news is that Lenovo is launching some of it’s ThinkPad models with the new Intel Optane caching drives. Due to the small storage capacity, these Optane M.2 drives will be used for HDD caching. The models that will include the new technology are ThinkPad T470p, L470, L570, T470, and T570.

Lenovo is also trying to push even further the use of USB-C Thunderbolt 3. The new port will enable Lenovo to provide it’s customers with some new accessories that allow easier docking solution than traditional docking stations.

Two of the models will also come with Windows Hello cameras for facial recognition.

The company is also introducing a new color option for some models. This new silver look won’t appeal to all users as some are bound to the traditional matte black, but it’s a nice option to have.
