Quick look at Lenovo P2 – first impressions, camera, performance

The concept of a mid-range smartphone is a bit extensive nowadays as we have more and more to choose from. The last device that came into our office is exactly from this mid-range class but it is definitely closer to its upper boundary. This is the Lenovo P2 which is already going through our tests and we will soon make a full review. The smartphone stole the hearts of the fans the moment it got released and that’s why we prepared a first impressions article for the most eager.

The design of the phone is characterized by the metal unibody construction which is only 8.3 mm thick – that’s quite impressive for a device with a 5100 mAh battery. Furthermore, the edges on the back are a bit rounded which gives the feel for an even thinner profile. Another interesting aspect of the design is the presence of a physical Home button with an implemented fingerprint sensor which we got used to seeing in the back of the devices. And lastly, on the left side of the phone, you will find a dedicated button that instantly turns on the ultra power saving mode.

P2 runs on the Snapdragon 625 SoC which has eight Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz. Graphics performance is handled by the Adreno 506 graphics card. We recently tested the same chip in the Moto Z Play which results in the performance tests were more than satisfying so we expect to get similar scores with the P2. You can see the results from Geekbench 3 (left) and 3DMark Ice Unlimited (right) below. You can choose between 32 or 64 GB of internal storage and 3 or 4 GB of RAM. Keep in mind that just the operating system takes up 8 GB of storage.

The display has a diagonal of 5.5 inches which will provide you with enough space but it will also make one hand operations harder. If that is a problem for you don’t worry because you will find a one-hand mode in the menu. The resolution of the screen is 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD) which translate to a pixel density of 401 ppi.

The operating system is Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Lenovo’s proprietary user interface on top. There are not a lot of unnecessary preinstalled apps but you will find lots of handy features and modes in the menu. We will talk more about them in the upcoming full review.

The 5100 mAh battery deserves our special attention. We expect a long battery life. We will put the battery to all of our five tests but just from the initial time we had with the device for the first impressions, we can say that it might be one of the most long-lasting ones.

The 13-megapixel shooter on the back can capture 4K (3840 x 2160) video. You can see the available camera modes from the image below.
