Quick look at Sony Xperia X Performance – first impressions, camera, performance

Last month we shared with you our reviews of Sony Xperia X and Xperia XA, and now we would like to have a quick look at the premium member of this lineup. Of course, we are talking about Xperia X Performance, which is now in our hands and ready to be tested. Before publishing a detailed review, however, we have prepared a short article with our first impressions for those of you who are impatient.

If you are interested in Xperia X Performance, you can check its price and availability here: http://amzn.to/2aHZd6f

Actually, Sony Xperia X Performance is quite similar to the classic Xperia X, but still, it has some distinguishing features that define it as a flagship model. As far as design is concerned, we are again presented with a metal chassis, the familiar form factor and placement of buttons and other components. What is different here is the dimensions, or, to be more specific, the profile thickness – 8.7 mm vs 7.9 mm in Xperia X. Additionally, the weight is also greater – 164 grams vs 153 grams in Xperia X and 137 grams in Xperia XA. Our testing unit is the silver version and it really looks premium and stylish. What’s more, the back doesn’t seem to attract fingerprints. Another notable difference is the fact that X Performance is the only one to offer dust and water resistance thanks to its IP68 certificate (up to 1.5 meters and up to 30 minutes).

Speaking of differences, the biggest one is perhaps the mobile CPU – Snapdragon 820. Thus, X Performance can compete with other top-notch models on the market when it comes to performance. This is not to say that Snapdragon 650 (present in Xperia X) is a mediocre performer, but when we’re after the best Qualcomm CPU performance, Snapdragon 820 is the way to go. Apart from providing high performance, this chip does not lead to serious exterior overheating, or these are our first impressions at least. For this publication, we managed to test how this device performs in Geekbench 3 and 3DMark Ice Unlimited.

As far as software is concerned, there aren’t any surprises. Again available is Android 6.0 Marshmallow along with Sony’s UI, which brings changes in layout and some useful pre-installed apps. Additionally, you get a fingerprint scanner, which is unavailable only in Xperia XA.

Furthermore, this smartphone comes with front-facing loudspeakers, a 5-inch Full HD display with the popular Triluminos and X-reality technologies by Sony, as well as a slightly bigger battery. Whether the latter will have an effect on the phone’s durability or not, we have yet to see. Last but not least, there is a 23MP camera that comes with the familiar capabilities, more important of which are the Sony hybrid autofocus and f/2.0 maximum aperture value. However, it is again incapable of recording 4K video. On the other hand, the front-facing camera is 13MP, which is good news to selfie fans. In the screenshots below you can find the available settings in the camera menu.
