The IdeaPad Gaming 3i will be remembered as one of the better-budget gaming laptops. For 2022, Lenovo did something extra with the lineup, introducing the regular 15.6-inch and 17.3-inch versions, as well as a 16-inch version with a taller 16:10 display. This is paired with 12th Gen Alder Lake processors and RTX 30-series graphics. 2022 was the last year of the IdeaPad Gaming 3i, as Lenovo is discontinuing the lineup, in favor of a new budget-friendly gaming laptop series, the LOQ, which is similar to what HP did with its Victus lineup and how it took over for the Pavilion Gaming laptops.

1. Display quality
Starting amazingly, the 16-inch FHD+ IPS display on the laptop is simply great. It almost feels too good to have it in this laptop, providing a more budget-friendly alternative to the very successful Legion 5 Pro. The panel reaches 363 nits at peak brightness, while also being quite uniform, as the panel is well-backlit throughout its entire surface area. It covers 96% of the sRGB gamut, providing solid colors for design and color grading.

2. Upgradeability
The IdeaPad Gaming 3 presents good upgradeability, with two SODIMM slots for DDR4 memory, as well as two M.2 slots for Gen 4 SSDs. However, one of the slots is smaller, so you’d have to get the little 42mm drives, instead.

3. Design and build quality
Yes, the laptop is entirely made from plastic, however, so is every single one of its competitors, so we can’t exactly judge it. There is some flex from the lid and the base, however, it’s nothing to fear or worry about. The design of the laptop has improved, being just as minimal as before, but with a few more sporty and gamer-y touches, like blue accents on the sides and the back, as well as prolonged backside, which also houses the cooling components, moving them away from the keyboard, where they can cause excess heat and discomfort. In terms of dimensions, the laptop is a bit heavy at 2.60 kg, but you have to think about the larger screen. On the other hand, it’s pretty thin, at just 20.9 mm.
4. Input devices
The keyboard on the IdeaPad Gaming 3 devices has always been good, and this one is no exception. We have a full-sized unit with a NumPad and either a white or a 4-zone RGB backlight. Typing on it is fantastic, thanks to the long key travel and the clicky feedback. The touchpad is very good as well. Thanks to the Mylar cover, smoothness is assured, while the responsiveness that it provides is just phenomenal.

1. I/O
In terms of ports, the IdeaPad Gaming 3i comes with two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, one USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, an HDMI port, a LAN port, and a 3.5 mm audio jack. We would have liked to see an SD card reader of some kind as well as Thunderbolt support, however, the Type-C port does have power delivery and DisplayPort support by itself, so it’s fine.
