[Specs and Info] ASUS TUF Gaming A15 (FA507, 2023) – A small improvement over last year’s device

Last year, we praised ASUS’s TUF laptops, which came with better cooling and more powerful components, which is a recipe for success in the budget and mid-range gaming segment. The TUF Gaming A15 was incredibly successful, providing endless battery life that’s great to see from a gaming machine. The Ryzen processors did a lot to help with that, so we’re quite interested to see what ASUS is cooking in 2023. The 2023 version of the A15 offers Ryzen 7000-series processors as well as RTX 40-series graphics.

Today we’re giving you a quick overview of the ASUS TUF Gaming A15 (FA507, 2023).

ASUS TUF Gaming A15 (FA507, 2023): Full Specs

Design

The TUF A15 keeps the design from last year, which is fantastic, as we really liked the laptop’s external appearance. The lid is made out of aluminum and comes in two finishes, either Jaeger Grey or Mecha Grey. The rest of the body is made of plastic, however, the build quality last year was amazing, with no flexing from both the lid and the base. The laptop is also quite portable for a 15.6-inch gaming machine, weighing around 2.20 kg and having a profile of 24.9 mm. On the base, you can also find the status LEDs, which are arranged like crosshairs. The keyboard has a backlight and highlighted WASD keys. The touchpad is pretty big as well, with a TUF logo in the upper right corner.

The port selection includes two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, one USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, one USB Type-C 4.0 port, an HDMI 2.1 port, a LAN connector, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

Display

The display selection includes a Full HD IPS panel with a 144Hz refresh rate, as well as a QHD IPS, display with a 165Hz refresh rate. According to ASUS’s specs sheet, even the FHD display has 100% sRGB coverage. On the other hand, the QHD panel has 100% DCI-P3 coverage. Both displays have G-Sync support, as well as Advanced Optimus, which is like an automatic MUX switch that needs no restart.

Specifications and features

The laptop is powered by either the Ryzen 7 7735HS or the Ryzen 9 7940HS. The Ryzen 7 still uses the older Zen 3+ architecture, while the Ryzen 9 uses Zen 4. Both come with 8 cores and 16 threads. For graphics, you can pick between three RTX 40-series GPUs, the RTX 4050, RTX 4060, and RTX 4070, all three with a 140W power limit. So far we’ve tested the RTX 4070 and RTX 4050 and they are doing really well, even if they don’t always reach up their peak power limits. For cooling, the Ryzen 7-powered systems keep the setup from last year, which has 4 heat pipes, while the Ryzen 9 laptops get an additional heat pipe. All versions come with a 90Wh battery, which last year lasted for a while, and with the lower wattage of these CPUs that we have today, we similar if not better results.
