Lenovo ThinkPad P15v Gen 3 review – a mobile workstation with an impressive display

Design and construction

Lenovo has created this machine only using plastic. At least this is how it is for the outside. The lid, as a consequence, is pretty soft, and flexy. However, the base seems to have very good structural support on the inside, because we see absolutely no flex when we twist it. As far as the design goes, you can see that it is very familiar, resembling the industrial exterior of every ThinkPad.

In terms of dimensions, the laptop is pretty portable. Its profile is 22.7mm thick, while the weight depends on the presence of a dedicated GPU. If you opt for an iGPU only, you will get a weight of 2.096 kg, while dGPU-enabled devices stop the scale at 2.226 kg.

Thankfully, the lid can be opened with one hand. Once you do that, you will see the super thick top and bottom bezel, with the side ones being slightly thinner. Generally, this gives the laptop a pretty medieval look. Other than that, the top one houses the HD Web camera with its privacy shutter and optional IR face recognition scanner.

On the base, there is the speaker grill. Obviously, the keyboard is fantastic. It is backlit and spill-resistant, which is great. In addition, you get long key travel, clicky feedback, and a NumberPad section. What more can you ask for?

Well, there is a TrackPoint, which works with a trio of buttons, placed right above the touchpad. Speaking of which, it has a Mylar surface, pretty accurate tracking, and good response. On its right, you will find the fingerprint reader.

On the bottom panel, you only find the ventilation grill. It is where the single fan draws its cool air from, before exhausting it through a vent on the left side of the device.

Ports

On the left side, there is the power plug, a Thunderbolt 4 connector, and a Smart Card reader. Switch to the right, and you will see the Kensington Security lock slot, a LAN port, two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, an HDMI 2.0 connector, an SD card slot, and an Audio jack. Furthermore, there is a SIM card tray on the back.

It is to be expected as Gen 2 was already running hot on Tiger Lake-H.
The AMD variant of the P15v Gen3 runs cooler than the Intel Gen 3 variant. However, the cooling solution will be taxed if both CPU & discrete graphics are utilised heavily.
