The Christmas season is fast approaching and even though we still have a little less than two months left, some awesome offers have already appeared on the horizon. That is why we decided to acquaint you with a really decent solution if you are looking for an affordable smartphone. We must also state that it’s not a conventional smartphone that we are looking at – it’s a phablet – the Umi Plus.

Design and display

At the current price of $189.99, the Umi Phablet offers exceptionally stylish design language. It uses an aluminum alloy for its construction which brings a great degree of elegance in the entry-level phablet market. On the phone’s back you can find its 13MP rear camera, accompanied by a dual-tone flash, some product inscriptions. As far as the sides are concerned, the button placement is not in any way unusual. What’s more interesting, though, is the USB Type-C connector on the bottom – a pleasant addition for this market segment!

Moving on to the front, we are presented with a 5.5-inch Full HD display manufactured by SHARP. It also uses 2.5D arc glass, which contributes to the overall premium design. Yes, a 4K resolution would have been appreciated but we can’t complain at this price, Full HD will do just fine.

Battery and performance

Umi Plus ships with a big 4000 mAh battery, which is understandable since we are dealing with a phablet device. According to the manufacturer, this unit can provide you with up to 15 hours of gaming, 17 hours of video playback and 121 hours for your favorite music.

We must also devote a few words to the mobile CPU Umi Plus makes use of. It is an octa-core chip – Helio P10 clocked at 1.8GHz. If you follow our publications, you will know that the Meizu m3 note comes with the same chip and we can say that it’s quite good in handling temperatures. Additionally, you are presented with 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, which is expandable via the microSD card slot (supports up to 256 GB). Indeed, more than enough.

Camera and features

Umi Plus boasts a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front-facing unit for all of you selfie fans out there. The former is accompanied by a dual-tone flash to help you capture better images when the lighting is not very good. It also uses phase detection autofocus for faster focusing. Umi Plus also has dual ISP processing which results in enhanced dynamic range and less noise in your photos.

This phablet also boasts some features inherent to more expensive mobile devices. One such example is the available fingerprint scanner – Touch ID 2.1. This can come in handy when you’re making payments or simply want to enhance the security of your phone. Additionally, this phablet also comes with a chip ensuring high-quality HiFi audio with loud enough output.
