It’s been a few months since the release of AMD’s new Ryzen architecture. The company has enjoyed big media coverage ever since and prices of some Intel counterparts have dropped most likely because of Ryzen. Now after a few month has passed we can start talking about market shares.

According to PassMark, one of the most used benchmarking tools, AMD’s share of the desktop CPU market for the first quarter has risen by 8.4%. This is a very big increase when you consider that the Ryzen processors released just one month before the end of the quarter. The 8.4% bump results in a total share of 26.2% for AMD while Intel has dropped to 69%. Interesting to say this leaves a whole 4.8% to VIA Technologies (the third x86 CPU manufacturer in the world). The graph that PassMark provides shows us how Intel and AMD have held their shares for Q1 since 2004. This is AMD’s biggest share since 2014. Just to put this in a time frame, the last time the two rivaling manufacturers had equal shares was way back in 2006.

Note that PassMark does not give official market share information. It only accounts active (in its database) desktop computers with Windows. It does not represent the total amount of sold units so information from Intel or AMD will be different. Nonetheless, we see a big increase of AMD users which extrapolates to real sales and this is just for the first quarter. We can’t wait to see the financial report of AMD for Q2 or H1. With ThreadRipper’s upcoming release we can expect even further increase in AMD’s share.
