[Specs, Info, and Prices] Alienware x16 R1 – What’s with the RGB touchpad?

Alienware is known for sprucing up its devices with RGB and its brand-new X16 R1 laptop looks like a brand-new canvas for the company to explore. The 16-inch machine comes with an RGB touchpad, which is a first for us, albeit the tech did make an appearance in previous versions of the Alienware x17 and x15 laptops. More than that, you’ve got the best possible combination of Raptor Lake and the new 40-series graphics from NVIDIA, which means endless gaming and productivity, as the displays are made for gaming, but not too shabby for design and complex studio work as well.

Today we’re giving you a quick overview of the Alienware x16 R1.

The Alienware x16 R1 is available now with a starting price of $2,704.99.

Alienware x16 R1: Full Specs

Design

Alienware laptops generally use a lot of metal, which is great, as build quality is important, especially at this price point. Alienware prides itself on offering premium products, so using plastic would feel cheap. We find a two-tone finish, with Lunar Silver on the bottom panel and the lid, while the base comes in black. On the back, we have the X debossed onto the lid, while the Alienware logo shines in the same colors as the touchpad. The pad is covered in glass, which is rare to see in gaming devices. In terms of dimensions, the x16 weighs 2.72 kg and has a profile of 18.57 mm, which is very thin. What’s very interesting is that the entire I/O is moved to the back, as the sides are clear and used entirely for ventilation.

The ports are bunched up together, with two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, one UBS Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, a Thunderbolt 4 port, an HDMI 2.1 port, one mini DisplayPort, a MicroSD card slot, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

Display

The laptop has two displays available, both with a QHD+ resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio. The brightness and contrast ratio are the same as well, at 300 nits and 1000:1, respectively. The difference between them is the refresh rate and color coverage, as the 165Hz display covers the sRGB gamut while the 240Hz option covers both the sRGB and DCI-P3 gamuts.

Specifications and features

The laptop comes with a lot of power under its bonnet, with both H-series and HX-series processors from the Raptor Lake family. Configurations start with the Core i7-13620H, which is a 10-core chip with 16 threads. You can also get the classic Core i7-13700H, which has 14 cores and 20 threads. There’s an even more powerful option, a Core i9-13900HX, a 24-core processor. We’ve already seen all three CPUs in action, and they deliver pretty decent performance. All in all, it boils down to the laptop’s cooling, which is on a laptop-per-laptop basis. For graphics, you have the entire RTX 40 series available, all the way from the RTX 4050 to the big boy RTX 4090.
