ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED (UP3404) review – premium sturdy transformer with a stunning OLED display and powerful hardware

Verdict

It is no exaggeration to say that the ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED (UP3404) is one of the best convertible laptops that we have tested up to date. The build quality is exceptional, the base and the lid are made of metal, and there is a glass protection for the screen. The chassis is built like a tank and the device feels sturdy while using it in a tent or tablet mode.

The keyboard has a backlight, it’s comfortable for typing, and it’s quiet too. The large touchpad has a smooth surface that allows great accuracy. The pad can be turned into an ASUS NumberPad 2.0 which is useful for calculations.

The 14″ 2.8K HDR OLED display (Samsung ATNA40YK07-1 (SDC4171)) amazes us with its infinite contrast ratio and 100% sRGB and DCI-P3 coverage. It’s bright and color-accurate – the average dE score is just 1.1 which is awesome! This means you can use the laptop for content creation or for color-sensitive tasks. The panel impresses with a 90Hz refresh rate and super-fast pixel response time. It’s not a gaming notebook, but since the iGPU can show more than 90FPS in CS:GO on Max details, this pairs very well with the fast screen.

This is possible because the hardware under the bonnet is potent. Our machine is configured with a Core i7-1360P that has 12 cores, 16 threads, and a 28W TDP. When it comes to clocks under load, we’ve seen better performing 14-inchers with the same CPU in short and medium stress. In prolonged periods of load, the CPU in this ASUS device can sustain high enough P and E core frequencies which results in snappy performance. The laptop feels fast in any kind of usage (alright, it’s not a workstation) despite the fact that it has a QLC SSD. This is kind of odd considering the price category.

The comfort under load is good. The single fan can be heard mostly when the CPU is pounded with a serious load. The fan is turned off when the processor temperature is below 50°C. The laptop doesn’t have a lot of shortcomings but we can mention the upgradability options that were almost non-existent which is standard for most compact transformers. The memory is soldered and the maximum amount of RAM is 16GB of LPDDR5 -4800MHz RAM in dual-channel mode. This memory size should be enough for most people but it’s not future-proof. For storage, there is just one M.2 slot compatible with Gen 4 SSDs.

The ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED (UP3404) is a great 2-in-1 laptop that has great build quality, a stunning OLED display, a comfortable and quiet keyboard, and powerful hardware for the class. Last but not least, the battery life is notably long given the high-res OLED screen – more than 14 hours of Web browsing on a single charge sounds great!
