Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 3 review – small laptops are getting seriously powerful

Design and construction

Once again, Lenovo sells this machine in two different colors – Grey and Black. The first one comes dressed in all aluminum, while the latter uses a combination of aluminum, plastic, carbon fiber, and glass fiber.

Its weight can vary from 1.20 to 1.32 kg, depending on the build materials, and the battery inside. However, the thickness stays relatively stable at around 18.1-18.25mm. Interestingly, both the lid and the base show some flex (we had the black model with the aluminum base). Expectedly, the latter was more rigid.

Opening the lid with one hand is possible. Thankfully all of the bezels (without the top one) are thin. You get a choice of an HD, or a Full HD Web camera, either of which features a privacy shutter. Moreover, the better camera can be paired with an IR face recognition scanner.

Speaking of scanners, the power button doubles as one. It is separated from the keyboard. Next to it, you will find the two speaker cutouts. Below them, there is the backlit, spill-resistant keyboard, which is extremely easy to service. In addition, you get long key travel and clicky feedback, which results in a comfortable typing experience.

The TrackPoint is meant to work with the three buttons above the touchpad. They look quite wide, thanks to the larger size of the Mylar surface on the touchpad. Precisely, it spans an area of 61 by 115 mm and has pretty accurate tracking.

This leaves us to the bottom panel. It only has one ventilation grill, placed right below the single fan. The hot air, respectively, is exhausted through a vent on the left side of the right (left on the image) side of the machine.

Ports

On the left side, you get two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI connector, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and an Audio jack. Then, on the right, you will find a Kensington lock slot, another USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and a Smart Card reader. Here, you also get an optional SIM card tray, which is placed on the back.
