MSI Vector GP77 13V – Top 5 Pros and Cons

The new 40-series gaming laptops keep impressing, with so far Lenovo, ASUS, and MSI coming out of the woodwork swinging, each with its own interpretation of how the new parts should work in terms of power management and clock speeds. So far we’ve only had the luxury to test very high-end configurations, but today, we have a more mid-range option, with the MSI Vector GP77 13V. The laptop that was previously known as the Leopard, comes back in 2023 with the same sleek approach to the design, while bringing potent hardware into the mix, including up to a Core i9-13900H and a 140W RTX 4070. The laptop looks more than powerful enough for the average consumer, so unless you’re a heavy enthusiast, you won’t really need all the power output from an HX-series CPU and a 175W GPU.

Today we’re presenting you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the MSI Vector GP77 13V.

MSI Vector GP77 13V: Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the MSI Vector GP77 13V

1. Design and build quality

While the Vector looks sleek, it’s not the same sleek as the Legion laptops, which have a more rectangular and boxy shape. The Vector has a bit more angles, as well as an aggressive rear end with bulging heat vents and hinges, which give off some serious supercar vibes. Most of the laptop is made of aluminum, except for the bottom panel, the hinge covers, and parts of the vent covers. This makes for a sturdy device that doesn’t flex easily, which is great.

The lid opens easily with one hand, giving us a full view of the base. We have a full-sized keyboard with a NumPad, as well as a per-key RGB backlight. The keys have tactile and clicky feedback, as well as good key travel, so it’s good for both gaming and typing in general. The touchpad could be bigger, but nevertheless, we’re happy with the smoothness, accuracy, and responsiveness.

2. Display quality

There are two display options, with either a Full HD 144Hz IPS panel or a QHD 240Hz IPS panel. We tested the QHD option, which to no surprise, is a great screen for both gaming and content creation. It’s got excellent viewing angles and relatively high brightness, peaking at 325 nits. The color reproduction is rich as well, with 100% sRGB and 99.3% DCI-P3 coverage.

Here are the results of our color accuracy test with both the stock settings (left) and with our Design and Gaming profile applied (right). As you can see, our profile calibrates the display to a dE value of 0.8, which means incredibly accurate colors that are ripe for design and color grading.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

3. Upgradeability

We’re very satisfied with the upgradeability of the Vector, as with two SODIMM slots and two M.2 SSD slots, you can fit up to 64GB of DDR5 memory, as well as a bunch of very fast Gen 4 storage.

Here is our teardown video, which shows how to access both the RAM and SSD slots of MSI Vector GP77 13V.

4. Cooling

The laptop is cooled down by 5 heat pipes and two fans. The pipes are evenly spread among the CPU and GPU, while the VRMs have a separate heat pipe.

Max CPU load

Intel Core i7-13700H (45W TDP)0:02 – 0:10 sec0:15 – 0:30 sec10:00 – 15:00 min
MSI Vector GP77 auto fan speed3.86 GHz @ 3.08 GHz @ 89°C @ 135W3.75 GHz @ 3.10 GHz @ 94°C @ 128W3.24 GHz @ 3.00 GHz @ 81°C @ 90W
MSI Vector GP77 with cooling pad3.87 GHz @ 2.95 GHz @ 84°C @ 131W3.83 GHz @ 3.10 GHz @ 93°C @ 135W3.24 GHz @ 3.10GHz @ 80°C @ 90W

Looking at the stress test with both the Auto setting and the Cooler Boost option, there isn’t any significant change in clock speeds or wattages. Even with a cooling pad, there’s next to no difference, so don’t bother investing in one.

Real-life Gaming

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 (140W)GPU frequency/ Core temp (after 2 min)GPU frequency/ Core temp (after 30 min)
MSI Vector GP772295 MHz @ 61°C @ 95W2295 MHz @ 61°C @ 95W

Despite the 140W TGP, the RTX 4070 doesn’t go above 95W. Still, we see stable clock speeds and low temperatures even after 30 minutes of gaming, while the performance output of the card is close to an RTX 3080 from last year, which is very commendable.

Comfort during full load

The laptop runs very quietly, as the fans don’t even start spinning when the CPU and GPU are below 49°C. This leads to a silent machine when you’re doing light work. Even with the Cooler Boost option turned on, we noticed that the laptop still wasn’t as noisy as we expected it to be. All in all, one of the more comfortable gaming laptops, considering its performance.

1 reason NOT to buy the MSI Vector GP77 13V

1. Battery life

Lastly, we were surprised to see only a 65Wh battery pack in a laptop with a 17.3-inch form factor, as there’s definitely enough space for it. The laptop lasts for 6 hours and 40 minutes of Web browsing, or 7 hours and 9 minutes of video playback, which are good results, however, we couldn’t help but imagine it with a larger 80Wh or a 90Wh, which would certainly put it in a league of its own.
