Lenovo Legion Slim 7i / S7 (16″ Intel, Gen 8) review – surprisingly powerful thin gaming laptop

Design and construction

We like the design of most Legion machines because it’s stylish and yet stealthy. This one right here isn’t an exclusion, the look of it is up to today’s standards, and the laptop seems fresh and kind of mature. This makes it suitable for almost everyone – students, teachers, gamers, etc. Yep, the device lacks the RGB craziness of the modern high-end gaming machines so perhaps most people should not know that you own a powerful beast. This is possible due to the rounded edges, the anodized finish, and the neutral Storm grey color scheme of our machine. You can also pick the laptop in Glacier white color.

We are quite surprised by the profile thickness which is 17.6-19.9 mm. Not bad for such a laptop. The weight is 2 kilos and that’s good given the powerful internals. The device is made of aluminum.

Opening the lid with one hand is a super easy job thanks to the slight “hump” in the middle of the lid. The protrusion is a home of a 1080p Web camera with an E-shutter. The bezels around the display are narrow as possible and at the same time, the lid can be considered stable in most cases. Still. it’s a bit bouncy when you release it and you can flex it a bit on purpose if you want but overall, the rigidness is normal. You can place another laptop on top of it (when the lid is closed) and it’ll survive this torture.

The lid can also be opened to a fully flat 180-degree position. The base is sturdy and we observed a bit of flex in the area between the Space key and the touchpad.

The keyboard is nothing but great. It has a backlight (the default variant glows in White color, and there is an optional model with a per-key RGB backlight), a NumPad section, big Arrow keys, long travel, and clicky feedback. This makes it comfortable for both typing and gaming. Oh, and the unit is spill-resistant as well. The touchpad is smooth because of the glass surface and it allows smooth tracking and good responsiveness.

There are a lot of ports on the back of the laptop and there is a small LED-illumined symbol above every port on this side. This is useful when you’re using the laptop in a dimmed environment.

We can spot a lot of stickers on the right side of the base and unfortunately, they will not make the device faster. If you remove them, you can enjoy the sleek design of the machine in its full glory.

You can see a huge ventilation grill on the bottom panel, as well as some rubber feet and the two speaker cutouts. The heated air is exhausted through four vents – two of them are on the back, while the other two are on the left and right side of the machine.

Ports

The port selection is generous. We’ll start with the left side – there is a Thunderbolt 4 connector, followed by a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) port and a 3.5 mm Audio jack. Both Type-C ports support data transfer, Power Delivery 100W, and DisplayPort 1.4 functions. The right side is kind of lonely with just an SD card reader and E-shutter. Most ports are placed on the back which is a great decision when it comes to better cable management on your desk. On this side, we can spot three USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 2) ports (the former has an Always On function), an HDMI 2.1 connector, and a power plug.
