Genesis Radium 600 Review

If you are a streamer or a content creator, you’ll probably need a good microphone if you want your audience to enjoy the content you’re offering. At least for us, audio quality is the most important thing when it comes to creating a video. If people can’t hear your voice loud and clear, probably they are going to search for another video that has better audio. Yes, no one likes to hear muted and not-so-clear voices in a video that is describing / showing  a product, and the same thing applies to gameplay streaming videos, etc.

Let’s say that your channel isn’t a huge one and spending a fortune on a microphone isn’t the most important thing for you at the moment. Genesis Radium 600 is one of the good microphones on the market that will not stretch your wallet too much and at the same time, this fella brings a good bang for the buck. It comes in a cool solid suitcase (yeah, considering the price tag of this mic this is super cool), and Genesis brands their product as meant for “beginners and professional streamers” – actually, the Radium 600 really looks like a “Pro”, at least at first sight. Let’s see how good this microphone is.

What’s in the box?

In short, you’ll get a briefcase, the microphone itself, a pop filter, a universal mount adapter, a mount that is adjustable, a windscreen foam, a manual, and a long USB cable. Not bad at all.

Design and construction

Some say that the devil is in the details and the first impression is always important. Genesis Radium 600 comes in a big sturdy suitcase protected by cardboard packaging. The whole bundle is a huge one – you’re seeing a normal-looking box with some pictures and a product description on it but on the top of the package there is a cutout which is showing the metal handle and a small part of the “flight case”. This is a really nice touch and it’s showing attention to detail.

The case is stylish enough (okay, kind of) to be used in a James Bond movie. The build quality feels great, especially for that kind of price tag – the microphone looks like a professional piece of tech. The whole base of the mic, as well as the grille, are made of aluminum – and the same goes for the “arm” of the pop filter. The stand looks like a durable one and it’s made of metal which is a good idea because it carries the whole weight of the microphone (which is big and heavy).

Usage, Features, Setup, Software and Testing

Assembling the microphone is a real piece of cake, the whole process is very intuitive and probably some of you will not even read the manual. When everything is put together, you’ll notice how stable the whole assembly is – this is possible due to the good build quality and the wide surface area of the metal stand. The height is adjustable and the mic can be rotated and tilted by your own preferences so you can fine-tune its position. The pop filter can be attached to the mount of the mic and it has a long, stable, and flexible “arm”. One side of the mic houses controls for “mute”, “gain”, “headphones volume” and a 3.5 mm audio jack. The USB cable is 1.8m long which perhaps should be enough for most people.

As we said earlier, Genesis promotes this product as one suitable for “beginners to professional streamers”. Actually, this mic can be used by everyone because it doesn’t require special skills, previous experience with such tech, or specific software – the Genesis Radium 600 provides a pure plug-and-play experience. For example, you can connect it to your gaming console, PC, laptop, or some other device that comes with a USB port and you can start using it right away.

Without any additional tuning, the recorded sound is just really good. During our testing, we realize that gain over ~30% isn’t needed (after that it starts to catch other sounds outsides your vocals), and in our case, that is the sweet spot for recording when the mic isn’t positioned close to you. Even without an additional gain boost, the microphone is able to record the incoming voices / sounds in a loud, clear, and crisp way.

Comparison between a default laptop mic and Genesis Radium 600

Okay, let’s do a quick comparison between a default microphone of a laptop and the Genesis Radium 600. The first audio sample is recorded with the aid of Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-54) while the second one is recorded with the Genesis mic. As you can see, the difference between the two microphones is like day and night – the Genesis Radium 600 recorded audio is much better compared to the laptop’s audio.

Sound cancellation also works great but of course, if you have a pet bird in your home, maybe it’ll be a good idea to place it in another room. Genesis Radium 600 can be used for gaming as well because it has a dedicated audio jack for this purpose which will keep the interference of the other sounds around you as low as possible.

Verdict

So, the Genesis Radium 600 is a great microphone that looks, feels, and records sound like a professional one. In reality, it is a real entry-level pro mic that can get the job done immediately – just assemble it and plug the USB cable into your PC, gaming console, or whatever you have and you can start recording instantly. The recorded quality of the audio is just great for the kind of price tag – our test audio files sound clear and crisp, and the noise cancellation works very well – except if you don’t have a hungry barking dog in your room.

Visually, this thing is a looker – it comes in a big briefcase which adds some “wow” effect when you’re seeing it for the first time, the build quality is a really good one – in most cases, you’re going to feel and touch aluminum and metal. The position of the mic can be easily adjusted in many ways – you can adjust the height or you can tilt and rotate the device. The included accessories are just enough for normal steaming and recording purposes – you got a pop filter with a long flexible “arm”, windscreen foam, an adjustable mount, and a long enough USB cable. Genesis Radium 600 is the sweet spot when it comes to a microphone for content creation that is budget-friendly at the same time.
