How to open Dell Precision 14 5470 – disassembly and upgrade options

This is not a typical workstation. It has a high build quality and everything, but there is practically no memory upgradeability. Thankfully, you can configure it with up to 64GB prepurchase, so make sure you make the right choice for yourself.

1. Remove the bottom plate

To access this device’s internals, you need to undo 8 Torx-head screws. Then, carefully pry your way around the laptop with a plastic tool. It’s best to start from the front corners.


2. Remove the battery

Inside, we meet a 72Wh battery pack. To remove it, unplug the battery connector, and undo the 5 Phillips-head screws that hold the battery to the chassis.


3. Upgrade memory and storage

This device comes in configurations from 8 to 64GB of LPDDR5 RAM, soldered to the motherboard. It works at 5200MHz. As for the storage, there is one M.2 PCIe x4 slot, which supports Gen 4 SSDs.


4. Cooling system

Two heat pipes cool both the CPU and the GPU. They are connected to two heat sinks, where two reasonably-sized fans blow the heat away. In addition, you get a couple of heat spreaders, that take care of the graphics memory and the VRMs.
