Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 4 review – another quiet and powerful business notebook

Verdict

The Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 4 is a solid machine that is also portable and light. At the same time, the performance is always there when you need it. The cooling doesn’t look impressive at all but the CPU can maintain a high P and E core clock in short and medium loads. The frequencies are also good even in longer stress no matter the 21W power limit. Comfort-wise, all looks great. The fan is almost quiet and the keyboard will not burn your fingers when the processor is pounded with heavy loads.

The 16:10 1200p IPS display (CSOT MNE007JA1-1 (LEN403A)) impresses with a 99% sRGB coverage, very good contrast ratio, and superb color accuracy with the aid of our “Design and Gaming” profile. The display is also PWM-free which is a must for a laptop that is meant for work. All this means you can use the notebook for color-sensitive tasks.

The cooling looks basic but in this case, it’s enough for taming the Raptor Lake U processor. The CPU can sustain around 3.8 – 3.7 GHz and ~2.8 GHz for the P and E cores in short and medium loads. In longer stress, the performance cores almost reach 2.40 GHz which is a respectable result given the entry-level cooling system. The single fan should be a quality one because it spins with ~3200 RPM during heavy stress but it’s nearly quiet at the same time. The external temperatures are also normal for standard usage.

The port selection is good for a thin device – two Thunderbolt 4’s and two USB Type-A connectors. The keyboard is comfortable for work thanks to the long key travel and the clicky feedback. It’s spill-resistant but the backlight is optional. The touchpad is smooth and fast. The Trackpoint is here if you need it and it works together with the trio of buttons above the pad.

The laptop is MIL-STD-810H certified but the chassis isn’t rock solid. The base is almost stable – there are a few bends here and there but that’s okay. The lid can be flexed when it’s opened, not too much but it’s more than we would like to see. However, the chassis feels premium to the touch and well-built.

The device is light – the maximum possible weight is 1.42kg. The profile is 17.9 mm so this fella can fit in most suitcases effortlessly. The charger weighs almost nothing so you can put it in one of your pockets. Now, the laptop isn’t perfect. The base package of features is adequate but if you want full-blown security and extras, the end price of the machine will be higher. The optional features are many – the keyboard backlight, the fingerprint reader, the IR camera, as well as the Smart card reader, and the WWAN slot.

The upgradability is the area where this notebook falls short but that’s okay considering the dimensions. There is just one M.2 slot and the machines with dGPU rely on soldered memory. The notebooks with iGPU-only have a SODIMM slot for DDR4 or DDR5 memory. Still, depending on the configuration, the maximum possible amount of memory can reach 40GB (or 32 in the worst-case scenario) which is plenty. You can use this machine for light gaming – 90 FPS in CS:GO on Max details is a great result for a machine with an iGPU.

There are many contenders in business class but the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 4 is a strong competition for all of them. It offers great performance for its form factor, superb color-accurate IPS PWM-free display, nice input devices, good comfort under load, and many security features.

一派胡言,真是垃圾笔记本,不要只看配置,自用T14,32+1T,用了一年半,降频严重,发热严重,风扇声音巨大,不要踩坑。严重降低生产力,现在换mac了,丝滑。

The ThinkPad T14 that we tested was from a retailer, so it’s possible that your unit had a defect or another issue. Nevertheless, Macs are as good as it gets, so you’ve made a good choice.
