Today we have the EliteBook 840 G9, which has a wide variety of hardware, with both the Alder Lake P-series and U-series, which you can pick depending on what work you’d need to do. However, HP doesn’t really allow you to access the full power of the hardware, as it tries to make the laptops quieter and cooler. 1. Input devices
The keyboard of the EliteBook turns out to be a pretty good unit, offering long key travel, clicky feedback, spill resistance, and a backlight, which pretty much covers everything. Due to the smaller 14-inch form factor, a NumPad is lacking, however, you have to make sacrifices with smaller devices. The touchpad is well-sized, with a glass surface, which provides smooth gliding, while the tracking is accurate and responsive.
2. Battery life
The laptop carries two battery options, with either a 38Wh or a 51Wh battery pack. We tested the latter, which lasts for 14 hours and 27 minutes of Web browsing, or 11 hours and 40 minutes of video playback, so a whole day of cordless work is definitely in the picture. Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.
3. Upgradeability
Despite using a smaller chassis, the EliteBook comes with two SODIMM slots for DDR5 memory that work in dual-channel mode and can fit up to 64GB. Storage-wise, there’s one M.2 slot for PCIe Gen 4 drives.

4. Display quality
At the front, we’re greeted by an FHD+ IPS display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, which is taking over the productivity laptop world. The panel has excellent viewing angles, a peak brightness of 422 nits, and a contrast ratio of 1560:1. It covers 97% of the sRGB gamut.

1. Prolonged performance
It turns out the apple doesn’t fall far away from the tree, as the EliteBook 840 G9’s log-run performance is about the same as any other HP business notebook. For cooling, the laptop relies on one heat pipe and one fan, along with a heat sink at the rear.

We see low clock speeds, paired with low wattage and temperatures at the 15-minute mark, while the cooling can certainly take a lot more.
Comfort during full load
Thanks to the hindering of the chip, the laptop is very comfortable, being quiet and cool on the outside, with a hotspot of only 37°C.
