4 reasons to BUY the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro (16″, 2022)

1. Design and build quality

The laptop has a very sleek aluminum chassis, which is the same as last year. We’re happy to see it since it’s both thin, light, and durable. It weighs only 1.92 kg and has a profile of 16.9 mm, despite carrying a 16-inch screen. Branding is minimal, with only small Lenovo logos on the base and lid. The lid has an FHD webcam that comes as standard, along with an IR sensor for face recognition.

Speaking of the lid, it opens with one hand, offering a decent keyboard with good key travel and clicky feedback. It’s not as deep as a gaming device, but that’s due to its sheer thinness. Above the keyboard, we find a thin, but long grill, next to which sits a power button. It’s mainly used for ventilation, which is always better than using it for speakers. The touchpad is covered in Mylar, which mimics glass pretty well, being very smooth, accurate, and responsive.

2. Display quality

On the front, we have a 16:10 IPS display with a QHD+ resolution. The panel has excellent viewing angles and reaches a peak brightness of 337 nits in the middle of the screen and 330 nits as an average across the surface with a maximum deviation of 7%. The contrast ratio is high, at 1680:1, which should lead to deep blacks when enjoying movies. The display covers 90% of the sRGB gamut, while the colors get decently accurate once applying our Design and Gaming profile, with a dE value of 1.5.

3. Battery life

The laptop pairs a 75Wh battery with a Ryzen 5 6600HS, which has a TDP of 35W. ASUS does the same thing with the Zephyrus G14, which led to very good battery life and performance. Going back to the IdeaPad 5 Pro, it lasts for 10 hours and 44 minutes of Web browsing, or 10 hours and 10 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

4. I/O

The laptop provides good connectivity, with two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, one USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, an HDMI 2.0 port, an SD card reader, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

1. Upgradeability

A sizeable negative about the laptop is the lack of any RAM upgradeability, with all 16GB of DDR5 memory being soldered onto the motherboard. This wouldn’t be that bad, if Lenovo offered higher configurations, as RAM requirements are rising with every year, with even current-day Creator programs and workloads eating up a lot. In terms of storage, there is one M.2 PCIe x4 slot that supports Gen 4 SSDs but fits only smaller drives.
