The high-end mobile workstation devices are no joke – to be competitive they have to offer top-end hardware, slim profiles, good screens, and portability as well. That’s not an easy task but at CES 2020, Dell is going to introduce workstations that meet those requirements – the Latitude 9510 (a normal mobile version and a convertible 360-degree one).

The aluminum bodies of those two look almost the same and they have the almost identical profile dimensions (14mm – 17mm z-height) but of course, the convertible notebook has a different hinge design. Both machines will feature 15″ panels with 1080p resolution – Dell is ensuring us that the panels are “super low power” ones, with good viewing angles, crisp colors, and 400 nits brightness. The screen of the 2-in-1 machine is touchscreen so you can use Dell’s own Active Pen stylus (not included in the retail box, you have to buy it separately) – this screen is protected by the latest Corning Gorilla Glass 6.

Some info about the hardware specs – 10th gen Comet Lake-U CPUs with 4 or 6 cores, UHD iGPUs, 16GB of DDR4 2133 RAM, and an M.2 drive (2230 size) that supports up to 1TB capacity. Not-so-great upgradability but the price for a powerful and slim workstation.

The I/O section looks promising – two Thunderbolt 3 ports with charging capabilities, a USB 3.1 Gen 1 (Type-A) connector, a 3.5-mm audio jack, an HDMI, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5, an optional SmartCard reader, and even a microSD card reader. The Snapdragon X24 4G/LTE and X55 5G modems are optional. Those who want a built-in 5G modem have to wait until July 2020 (the official sales will start on March 26, 2020).

The Latitude notebooks are business-oriented devices and that’s why the 9510 models will have a lot of built-in high-end security features. Some of them are Smart Card readers with Control Vault 3.0 authentication (FIPS 140-2 Level 3 certification), TPM 2.0 module (again, FIPS 140-2 certified), self-encrypting Class 35 storage, IR webcam, and a fingerprint reader. There will be more security-related features that are going to be announced at CES 2020.

The autonomous battery life is very important for business users and Dell knows that very well. The base version on Latitude 9510 is equipped with a 4-cell 52 Wh battery unit (ExpressCharge or Long-Life Cycle compatible, isn’t confirmed yet). The top-end machines will be equipped with a huge 6-cell 88 Wh Li-polymer (with ExpressCharge capabilities) that will offer more than 30 hours battery life. The machines bundled with the bigger battery will be heavier than the normal 9510 versions with the 4-cell unit.
