Acer TravelMate P4 (TMP413-51) review – compact and snappy

Design and construction

As you can see, the machine is suitable for office usage thanks to its modern and non-intrusive design. The Slate Blue color also contributes to the more stealthy appearance. The other color option is called Shale Black. The device is mostly made of aluminum. Only the bezels around the panel and the touchpad surface are plastic. The anodized finish with sandblast treatment doesn’t attract a lot of smidges which is good news for all users.

The lid opens easily with one hand but also feels flexible when we twist it. The base is a bit more solid but the area below the keyboard can be bent if you press it down. The keyboard deck is slightly wobbly during harsh typing. The laptop stops the scales at 1.40 kilos and has a profile thickness of 19.98 mm.

Welcome to 2015! Jokes aside – these thick bezels look so old-school.

The top one houses a Dual Mic 720p 30FPS Web camera with Temporal Noise Reduction, Acer Purified Voice, and a privacy shutter. There is an optional 1080p 60FPS IR unit with a TOF sensor and Acer User Sensing tech.

The hinge mechanism allows an angle of opening up to 180 degrees.

The optional backlit keyboard is surrounded by two front-firing speakers. The board is comfortable for long hours of work because of the big keycaps that offer long key travel and clicky feedback. The only downside of the unit is the half-sized “Up” and “Down” Arrow keys. The touchpad has a built-in fingerprint reader (option). The pad impresses us with its super smooth OceanGlass surface and good tracking.

You’ll find two long rubber feet, a battery reset pinhole, a large ventilation grill, and a small cutout for the Acer Dust Defender system on the bottom panel. The heat is guided through a vent on the back of the laptop that aims directly at the “lip” below the display. That’s why some amount of hot air makes its way to the screen during heavy system loads.

Ports

On the left side, there are two Thunderbolt 4 ports with DisplayPort and charging capabilities (65W), an HDMI 2.1, and a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port with power-off charging. On the right side, you can see a Kensington lock slot, another USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, an Audio combo jack, and an optional Smart Card reader.
