Lenovo ThinkBook 16 Gen 4+ review – near silent business laptop with metal build and good battery life

Verdict

The Lenovo ThinkBook 16 Gen 4+ left us with a lot of positive impressions. The laptop looks and feels premium thanks to the all-aluminum build. The chassis is sturdy which is crucial for a business laptop. The keyboard is comfortable for long hours of typing – it’s spill-resistant and the accountants should like the NumberPad section. The touchpad is big and has a smooth glass surface.

The 1200p IPS display (LEN160WUXGA (LEN9151)) is suitable for office usage. It has good viewing angles and a 16:10 aspect ratio. The lack of PWM flickering makes it appropriate for long hours of work. The panel has a low sRGB coverage and it is not very color-accurate either but that’s okay for a device like this one that isn’t meant for content creation.

The powerful hardware is complemented by a sufficient cooling system. Our laptop has a Core i7-1255U – the chip can maintain 3.30 GHz and 2.45 GHz P and E core clock as well as 37W and 65°C temperature under heavy stress. The Lenovo ThinkBook 16 Gen 4+ is one of the best performing devices with this CPU that we have tested up to date.

Probably because of the thin profile, the RAM is soldered. However, the maximum possible amount of memory is 32GB of LPDDR5-4800MHz in dual channel which should be enough for most people. For storage, there are two M.2 slots – one of them is for Gen 4 SSD while the other relies on the old Gen 3 standard. Still, you can install a PCIe NVMe 4.0 x4 there but the speed will be limited to 3.0 x4 levels.

Interestingly, the Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 (80EU) performs really well in this laptop and it can show ~81FPS in CS:GO with maxed-out visuals – nice! The battery life is notably long for a 57Wh capacity – 12 hours and 30 minutes of Web browsing or 8 hours and 20 minutes of video playback.

The comfort during load is very good – the fan is near silent even when the CPU is under 100% stress. The keyboard isn’t too hot to the touch and the WASD area plus the two palm rest zones are staying cool enough for normal work. Keep in mind that this applies to our device that has a U-series CPU and an iGPU. If you get a laptop with a Core i9-12900H and the optional 50W NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050, the noise levels and the external temperatures should be higher.

The port selection is spot on for such a notebook with its Thunderbolt 4 port and an SD card reader. The sound that is coming from the two 2W Dolby Atmos speakers is clear of deviations. On top of that, the price of this machine seems fair which makes the device an even better deal. The Lenovo ThinkBook 16 Gen 4+ is a business machine with many pros including a metal build, long battery life, PWM-free IPS display, and great performance under heavy stress.
