Acer Swift Edge (SFE16-43) review – has a lot of potential but the cooling solution needs a revamp

Verdict

On paper, the Acer Swift Edge (SFE16-43) looks like a great device. In reality, that’s more or less true but the machine has its flaws. The magnesium build feels good to the touch but the lid isn’t the most stable one out there. The base rigidness is okay but again, we’ve seen better.

The keyboard has an average key travel and feedback but maybe that’s due to the thin profile. The touchpad is smooth but its preciseness needs some improvement. The display should be one of the key selling features of the laptop. This big 16″ OLED panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio and infinite contrast is a real gem. It comes with 100% sRGB and DCI-P3 coverage, comfortable viewing angles, a 120Hz refresh rate, and fast pixel response times. Thanks to our “Design and Gaming ” profile, the color accuracy is enhanced from 2.8 to an average dE value of 1.9 which is good. The PWM usage is the only con of this panel.

The device is definitely portable with a weight of 1.24 kg and a 12.95 mm profile. This also affects the upgrade options which are limited – up to 32GB of soldered LPDDR5 memory and just one M.2 slot for Gen 4 SSDs. The cooling is another downside of this notebook. It comprises two fans and just one heat pipe. The 28W Ryzen 7 7840U can’t even maintain its base clock during light loads and in longer stress, the CPU frequency is just 1.89GHz. Still, the temperature of the chip is always low which is at least some kind of redemption.

At least for us, the two fans aren’t noisy during heavy usage when the “Performance mode” is applied. The port selection looks modern with its two USB 4 ports and MicroSD card reader. The battery capacity is just 54Wh but we expected more in this aspect because the AMD CPUs are well-known for their efficiency. Speaking of the battery, the unit is glued to the base, and removing it seems very risky.

The Acer Swift Edge (SFE16-43) is a laptop with a lot of potential but the cooling solution of this machine is a real letdown. However, the great OLED display, the low weight, and the super thin profile can be a deal breaker for users who are constantly on the go.
