MSI Cyborg 15 (A12V) review – there is so much power in its tiny 45W GPU

Design and construction

This notebook features a fresh design with some translucent plastic parts. They may not reveal much, but the overall appearance of the device is definitely improved. Its lid is made out of metal and has pretty good resistance to flex.

On the other hand, the entire base is plastic. While the base is a bit softer in this aspect, we are happy with the lack of severe bending around the keyboard. As we mentioned earlier, the laptop weighs 1.98 kg, while the profile is 21.95-22.9mm thick.

The lid opens with one hand and houses a thick bottom bezel and thin top and side borders. The top one features an HD Web camera.

Moving to the base, we see even more translucency – the WASD keys. The keyboard offers a decent typing experience with long key travel and clicky feedback. Moreover, it has a NumberPad and reasonably-sized Arrow keys. Also, its backlight is a non-obnoxious blue, rather than RGB, or the more popular in this price range red.

Below the keyboard, there is the touchpad, which is pretty big to be fair. It offers a smooth gliding experience and pretty accurate tracking.

And on the bottom panel, there are the two speaker cutouts, as well as a ventilation grill. Respectively, hot air escapes the chassis through two vents – one on the back, and one on the left side.

Ports

On the left side of the machine, there is a security lock slot, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and an Audio jack. And on the right you get the power plug, a LAN port, an HDMI 2.0b connector (MSI states it’s a 2.1 but supporting a maximum of 4K @ 60Hz), a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) port with DisplayPort output, and another USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port.
