Top 5 reasons to BUY or NOT to buy the Acer Aspire 5 (A514-54)
The Acer Aspire 5 is the latest lineup from Acer to get upgraded with Tiger Lake internals. Tiger Lake brings improvements both in the CPU and GPU space since the new Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 and G4 have performed really well (as good as iGPUs can perform, at least).
This paired with a semi-premium design and build quality as well as an appetizing price tag makes the device a really tempting offer, especially now, where laptops are needed more than ever, with the pandemic that is currently present.

4 reasons to BUY the Acer Aspire 5 (A514-54)
1. The Upgradeability
While some other budget devices fail at this, the Aspire 5 does a pretty okay job at providing a good platform that could be upgraded in the future. The device features a single SODIMM slot, as there are 4GB of RAM that are soldered onto the board. There is an additional M.2 PCIe x4 drive for an SSD and a 2.5-inch SATA drive with a connector, so props to Acer for that.
2. The Cooling
In terms of cooling, the Aspire 5 doesn’t offer much, but a pretty standard setup which you can see above. While it’s nothing special or breathtaking, it does an excellent job of keeping the device within reasonable temps. We recorded a maximum outside temperature of 35.7 degrees, which is great.
3. The Battery life
The device comes with a 50Wh battery unit, and although it might not sound impressive, it provides plenty of juice, considering the internal components of the notebook. The battery managed to last 11 hours and 7 minutes of Web browsing and 8 hours and 28 minutes of video playback.
4. The Performance
In terms of CPUs, you get to choose between three Tiger Lake processors, which are the latest ad greatest from Intel. Our unit came with the Intel Core i5-1135G7, which we believe is the middle ground between the entry-level Core i3 and the more powerful and expensive Core i7. Below we have it compared to other popular laptops in its class.

As for the GPU, first of all, you get the Intel Iris Xe Graphics G4 or G7 (80EU) and G7(96EU), and in addition to that, you can get the NVIDIA GeForce MX350 or MX 450.

1. The I / O and the build quality
We would like to get this off first, the I / O on this device isn’t great, but it passes the usability check by a hair. The USB ports on it are only Gen. 1 and there is no SD card reader available, for those of you who are into photography. Other than that, the laptop’s plasticky build makes it so that sturdiness isn’t one of its strong suits. At least the lid is made out of metal, which gives it the appearance of a more expensive device.
