Acer Spin 5 (SP513-54N) vs Acer Spin 5 (SP513-53N) – new design and display for the 2020 model

The 2020 model of the Spin 5 series  – SP513-54N looks like a big step in the right direction compared to the old model – Spin 5 (SP513-53N). It has e new design that looks modern and fresh. Thanks to the utilized materials the new laptop is definitely a more premium device. You can immediately spot that the screen has an unorthodox aspect ratio but you’ll appreciate it when you start browsing the Web because it has 18% more vertical space compared to last year’s model that has a standard 16:9 panel.

Of course, it’s a 2-in-1 notebook that can be transformed into three different devices – a clamshell laptop, a “tent” device, and it can be used as a tablet, as well, thanks to its hinge design and touchscreen support.

Design: a fresh new look

The SP513-54N comes with a new design and we like it because the bezels around the display are very thin, unlike the SP513-53N with its dated fat-bezel design. The fresh device has better portability thanks to its greatly reduced weight – just 1.2 kg. That’s exactly 400g less when compared to the previous-gen machine – the weight reduction is achieved by utilization of magnesium and aluminum. Additionally, its profile is 0.3mm slimmer than the 2019 laptop.

Display: IPS for all

The second big change is the display. As we already said, there is a new 3:2 aspect ratio that has a 2K resolution – 2256 x 1504. This would be a big improvement from a professional standpoint, as more vertical space means you can see more lines from your code and more content from a Web page. The panel is an IPS one and Acer promises good viewing angles.

Hardware: 10th gen Intel Ice Lake processor and LPDDR4X memory

Hardware-wise, the device looks better, again. You can choose between the Core i7-1065G7 and Core i5-1035G4 – both are 10nm chips that have Intel Iris Plus graphics inside.  They are 4-core CPUs with 8 threads and their iGPUs are one of the most powerful integrated graphics solutions on the market. The fast and efficient LPDDR4X memory will boost the performance of the entire SoC and it’ll help for longer battery life. On the other hand, the SP513-53N is equipped with the older Whiskey Lake CPU lineup, featuring the UHD 620 as an iGPU.

Connectivity and ports: Thunderbolt on board

The I/O isn’t bad at all. You can rely on two USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt support, two USB 3.1 (Gen 1) ports (one of them comes with power-off charging), there is also an HDMI port, a Micro SD card reader, and an audio combo jack.

Other specs: Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0

You can take advantage of the faster Wi-Fi 6 standard (802.11ax) alongside Bluetooth 5.0. So, in terms of connectivity, the 2020 machine is better than the SP513-53N – a pleasant upgrade to the last generation, that comes with a WiFi 5 support only. There is also an HD webcam with a 720p resolution.
